Met Gala 2013: The Stars Who Embraced ‘Punk – Chaos To Couture’

Safe to say that a lot of celebrities and designers struggled with the punk fashion theme at this year’s Met Gala, some embraced the studs, fishnets, the safety pins, spikes and wrapped tape look, most went with heavier eye make-up than usual, some really took the theme to town, Madonna I am talking about you, while others just ignored it completely, Gwyneth I am pointing this in your direction, and some even made their hair the focus, oh hello Anne Hathaway’s bleached blonde hair-do!!!

Usually I do individual posts for the Met Gala much like my Oscar coverage, but this year I thought I would just do a round-up of my best dressed looks, and focus more on the stars that actually made punk high-fashion.

As you would expect with it being punk, there was a lot of black, not as much leather as I thought, but lots and lots of black. My favourite black look, and one of my favourites of the night, had to be Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev in Monique Lhuillier, a look featuring a leather and lace halter corseted bodice, black lace leggings and a tulle skirt, which was made perfectly punk with her incredible side-swept hair - seriously she so nailed it!!!

Coming in at a close second to Nina in the all-black category had to be Cara Delevingne in Burberry, as well as doing a great trench coat it seems that the British heritage brand also has a naughty side with this gorgeous and sexy spiked, plunging v-neck gown, which worked perfectly with her smokey dark eyes and sleek hair and her strong eye brows.

There were a lot of other black punk looks that caught my eye - Emma Watson in a revealing wrapped tape Prabal Gurung gown, Jennifer Lawrence in a polished Dior look, and Diane Kruger in Chanel, which was more grunge than punk but I did like the pink dip-dyed touch to her ponytail and spiked clutch. Then there were the blonde crop bombshells – Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway – who both looked incredible.

Sporting a slinky black mesh Marc Jacobs gown that Kate Moss has worn, I really liked Miley’s commitment to the theme and I think I am the only one who actually loved her OTT spiked hair. In contrast, Anne’s new blonde hair-do was more sleek and worked perfectly with her very revealing, gorgeously embellished vintage Valentino gown from 1992, which totally makes up for her Oscar look. I love that both totally went for it and I think it paid off.

But there was one look that completely blew me away and that had to be Sarah Jessica Parker wearing an incredible Philip Treacy mowhawk, a dark and moody paint-splatted printed Giles gown and incredible Christian Louboutin boots – now that is how you do punk fashion!!!

BAFTA Awards: Sarah Jessica Parker In Elie Saab

BAFTA SJP BAFTA Awards: Sarah Jessica Parker In Elie Saab %tag

Who: Sarah Jessica Parker

Where: At the 2013 EE British Academy Film Awards held at the Royal Opera House in London

Wearing: A black three-quarter sleeved Elie Saab jumpsuit, featuring a boat-neck, keyhole detailing, and structured panels to the bodice and waist from the pre-fall 2013 collection, teamed with black heels and Fred Leighton jewellery

Verdict: I do love a jumpsuit on the red carpet and it seems that Elie Saab leads the pack on the most glamorous styles. I loved this bold look from SJP, I know people on Twitter were saying that it wasn’t award ceremony worthy, granted but she wasn’t nominated, wasn’t promoting a film, and was just there to present and I think that allows for a little more creativity, plus I think the cold weather played a part.

As much as I love the look I wish the neckline wasn’t so high, was a little revealing to add a touch of sex appeal, plus maybe a little embellishment, but I can’t deny how cool this outfit looked on last night’s red carpet.

I am also loving her poker straight hair and heavy make-up to her eyes – I just can’t help but loving this look and wishing I could pull off a jumpsuit!!!!

Maison Martin Margiela For H&M Party: SJP, Mena Suvari and Selma Blair

MMMforHM Maison Martin Margiela For H&M Party: SJP, Mena Suvari and Selma Blair %tagLast night in New York, H&M celebrated its latest designer collaboration with avant garde label, Maison Martin Margiela, and they brought out some of the brand’s celebrity fans to model the collection on the red carpet.

This party looked incredible, not only was the guest list pretty special with everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Kanye West, Julianne Moore, and Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford in attendance, but the venue, a nine-floor derelict, historical building in New York’s financial district looked to-die-for and the perfect setting for a very avant-garde party complete with art installations, dance performances and all housed around a glass-roofed atrium - oh how I wish I had been there!!!

As much as I loved Sarah Jessica Parker’s layered look, that oversized jacket is divine, my two best dressed of the night had to be Mena Suvari and Selma Blair. Both of course were wearing head-to-toe Maison Martin Margiela for H&M, and both looks came to under £300 – which for a red carpet event is amazing.

Probably the most controversial of looks was Mena Suvari, this body with an integrated bra is going to be a little like Marmite for some, you will either love it or hate it, and I absolutely love that Mena took it on last night. But what I love most about this look has to be that candy clutch – and at £34.99 this is so going to be mine!!!

Mena’s look comes to a grand total of £274.96 – don’t believe me? Well, here is a break down: body with integrated bra – £29.99; candy clutch, £34.99; invisible wedge pumps, £149.99; and hitched up skirt £59.99.

Wearing one of my favourite looks from the collection, Selma Blair looked incredible wearing the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M horizontally worn dress. I love her tea-pot pose in this dress – the perfectly way to show off the draping, and I adore her invisible wedge pumps – this is one seriously hot look which is finished off nicely with her intricate plaited up-do.

Gets Selma’s look on November 15, when the collection launches for just £249.98 – her horizontally worn dress is £99.99 and her black invisible wedge pumps are £149.99. Hot, Hot, Hot!!!

So who was your best dressed at the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M bash? Want to see more piccies of the red carpet – then head on over to my Facebook page.

Cape Loving: Sarah Jessica Parker In Giambattista Valli

Who: Sarah Jessica Parker

Where: At the Moscow premiere of her new film, I Don’t Know How She Does It

Wearing: A red Giambattista Valli Haute Couture strapless gown and cape, teamed with Fred Leighton hoop earrings and a solitaire necklace

Verdict: Seriously crushing over this look, I know it was last week but I have only just caught up with it, I am loving the colour, the cape and her ponytail – if ever an outfit was her alter ego Carrie Bradshaw this is it.

This look is from Valli’s first Couture collection and with beauties like this I seriously hope more celebs work the looks on the red carpet.

Because of this look I have put cape to the top of my autumn/winter wish list, also just thinking about to my recent bridal obsessions don’t you think this work in an ivory colour for a winter wedding.

Met Gala 2011: SJP Shimmers In McQueen

Who: Sarah Jessica Parker

Where: At the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City

Wearing: A silver crystal embellished Alexander McQueen dress from the autumn/winter 2005 collection

Verdict: I love the high neckline and the exquisite beaded detail to this gown, it has an elegance that suits SJP, but for me doesn’t have the wow factor I was expecting from her. But once again it is the hair that has won me over – love the volume.

SATC2: SJP Honours Friend In McQueen

sarahjessicaparkersatc2premierelondon3 SATC2: SJP Honours Friend In McQueen %tag

Who: Sarah Jessica Parker

Where: At the London premiere of Sex and the City 2

Wearing: A black bustier/tulle Alexander McQueen frock with McQueen lace heels and a fabulous Philip Treacy hat

Verdict: Well I like how I predicted right that she would opt for McQueen while in London, after Lee McQueen’s death earlier this year SJP gave such a moving tribute about her friend, that this is the biggest honour she could give him. I also love the fact that she went for the full theatrics that McQueen would have loved with the Philip Treacy hat – which completes this amazing dress.

I know some people will hate this hat – but for me this pure SJP glamour and miles better than the Valentino she wore to the NY premiere earlier this week.

The rest of the girlies didn’t look too bad either - definitely feel that the fashion stakes were higher in London. Both Kim and Kristin went for vintage – I absolutely love Kim’s look – she really is working a old-Hollywood vibe which I love.

So who did you think was the best dressed?

Verdict: Everyone thought she was going to go for Halston or even McQueen *I feel she’ll do this for the London premiere on Thursday* – but this Valentino is gorgeous and I love the striking colour.
