Editorial Loving: Paper Mag & Rodarte’s Star Wars Collection

When the Rodarte AW14 collection ended with five sci-fi gowns featuring Star Wars, fashion editors were divided, some thought it was silly and a gimmick, others loved how fun and cool it was. I have to be honest I was on the fun and cool side. Sometimes fashion takes itself way too serious and I love that Rodarte do generally step out and do something different.

Granted I can’t see the average Joe wearing these pieces, or even a celebrity on a red carpet, but they really are made for an editorial shoot and I love that Paper magazine for their 30th anniversary edition took the five dresses to George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch.

So the dresses were already cool, but now they have the creators seal of approval, plus they are being modelled by model-of-the-moment Ali Michael in a gorgeous setting, along with a few Star Wars most iconic characters, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Darth Vader. You don’t really get better than that!!!

I really do love fun shoots and this one by Todd Cole is certainly that. I think my favourite shot has to be the one with Luke Skywalker on the dress, I love how it blends into the setting.

Video Loving: Gorgeous Fashion, A Unicorn, & Elijah Wood – Can Only Be Rodarte

Normally when you get a fashion film you have close-ups of the pretty and very expensive clothes, there is a gorgeous model or actress involved, and generally the narrative is very limited – because really the film is just a way off adding a digital element to the print campaign.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of fashion films, but I love that the Mulleavy sisters behind fashion label Rodarte are a more than a little kooky as this 13 minute short film is weird, beautiful and more than a little unexpected.

Teaming up with director Todd Cole and production company The Creators Project, the short flick ‘This Must Be The Only Fantasy’ is a clever, dark sci-fi-meets-fantasy masterpiece that goes beyond just selling the gorgeous spring/summer 2013 collection, which of course it does, but adds in newcomer Sidney Williams, a unicorn, a fairy and Hollywood actor Elijah Wood.

Granted it is a little odd, you might be thinking at the beginning what do a group of weird-looking teens in LA have to do with a fashion label, but I love how it develops into a fantasy role-playing game where the teens have to embark on a journey that leads to them discovering a unicorn in the garden, a cloaked horseman, and alien-looking hooligans in order to rescue Elijah Wood from a video-game throne with the aid of a fairy, played by supermodel Guinevere Van Seenus.

As well as loving the sci-fi fantasy filled narrative, the slightly spooky original music by Beach House adds to the suspense of the short film, and the clothing just adds to the beauty – I love Sidney’s warrior princess outfit for her sword fight with the fringed leather.

Cover Loving: Katy Perry Scores Her First US Vogue Cover

So the rumours were true, Katy Perry has finally been given her first US Vogue cover for the July issue, and she looks beautiful and ethereal in an off-the-shoulder embroidered floral dress, which looks to be Valentino but is actually Rodarte, teamed with a super bold red lippy.

The singer will be opening up about her love life in the accompanying interview, according to the cover lines, but as it doesn’t go online at Vogue.com until Tuesday, June 18, so we can only wonder if it will discuss her rumoured ‘blossoming friendship’ with Robert Pattinson.

Shot by Annie Leibovitz the cover really does show how photogenic Katy Perry is, she looks incredible and I think that is helped by the simple styling and her flawless make-up that really shows off her gorgeous porcelain skin.

I really do love it, but is anyone else thinking it looks a little like Rihanna’s cover last year, which was also shot by Annie Leibovitz?

If I wasn’t already wanting to buy to see more of Katy Perry – the clever peeps over at Vogue put ‘Rebooting Balenciaga – All Eyes On Alexander Wang’ as one of the other cover lines – I can’t wait to read that!!!

Are you pleased to see Katy Perry on her first Vogue cover?

Star Trek Into Darkness: Zoe Saldana In Rodarte

Who: Actress Zoe Saldana

Where: At the premiere of Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek Into Darkness” held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California

Wearing: A nude embroidered tulle Rodarte dress from the autumn/winter 2013 collection, teamed with a gold and pearl cuff and matching earrings by Aurélie Bidermann, and orange and gold strappy heels

Verdict: I am not normally a lover of nude red carpet dresses but there is something different about this gorgeous Rodarte gown – it could be the sexy sheer panel to Zoe’s midriff, or even the Flamenco-style ruffles, or maybe it is just more gold than nude.

What I do know is that if anyone other than Zoe was wearing this it probably wouldn’t have featured on Fashionista Barbie, it wouldn’t have made me actually like nude, and it wouldn’t have made me rush out to the gym – her body looks phenomenal in this dress.

Finishing off her look are gorgeous pearl-accented jewels by Aurélie Bidermann, that cuff is spectacular, and I love how she has done her hair in a sleek low side chignon, it really does work well with her bold orange-red lips. As well as being impressed with Zoe’s red carpet looks I have also been loving her hair and make-up choices this promo tour.

SAG Awards: Kerry Washington In Rodarte

Kerry Washington, Rodarte, SAG AwardsWho: Kerry Washington

Where: At the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles

Wearing: A strapless white silk tulle Rodarte gown featuring an embellished bodice with Swarovski Elements and silver lace around the hemline and back, teamed with a silver Judith Leiber clutch, white Christian Louboutin heels, and jewellery from Fred Leighton

Verdict: Kerry Washington is fast becoming on of my favourite red carpet stars as I just don’t know what she is going to wear, and like Diane Kruger she seems to have an ability to wear near enough anything and look incredible.

This Rodarte gown was not only stunning on her but a little unexpected, which is probably why it was one of my favourite looks from the SAG Awards red carpet. Normally white gowns don’t work for me on the red carpet, but this dress has an edgy quality with the structured embellished bodice, which is complemented nicely with the soft lace-trimmed skirt.

Finishing off her gorgeous look were stunning diamond jewels from Fred Leighton, I love her ’50s platinum drop earrings and that metallic Judith Leiber box clutch is perfection. Then add in her flawless make-up and up-do and this for me is a perfect red carpet look.

Cannes 2011: Kirsten Dunst Wears Rodarte

Who: Kirsten Dunst

Where: At the Melancholia premiere during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival

Wearing: A polka dot halterneck Rodarte gown with mermaid hem, teamed with Bulgari jewels. Kirsten is wearing a pair Astrale earrings in white gold adorned with diamonds, a white gold ring and a vintage bracelet in platinum set with diamonds and emeralds

Verdict: I am not always the biggest fan of Kirsten Dunst, but I have to give it to her this is a great Rodarte gown, and it does seem the perfect debut for the brand in Cannes. I know I couldn’t believe it either. I always think mermaid silhouettes are the most elegant on the red carpet, they just add an extra sparkle of glamour, and I love the polka dots on this one.

Jameson Empire Awards: Keira Knightley Sparkles in Nude Rodarte

Who: Actress Keira Knightley

Where: At the Jameson Empire Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel

Wearing: A nude embellished Rodarte dress from the spring 2011 collection, with cut-out shoulders, ruffles and collar detailing, teamed with black heels

Verdict: I know that some will despise this look, but probably the things that most people don’t like I love. From the granny vibe of the cut *yes I do love it*, to the 80’s cut-out shoulders and shimmering embellishments, and then we have the ruffles – divine. The only thing I am not as keen on are the black heels, making me wonder what the runway look was teamed with as these don’t quite work for me.
