Met Gala 2014: My Best Dressed List

So I have already shared with you the battle of the pink, well it seemed wrong being a Barbie girl not to dedicate a whole post to my favourite shade, well here is my best dressed list, which was actually hard to narrow down as I thought this year’s Met Gala honouring Charles James was exquisite.

Best Dressed #1 – Blake Lively

Has to be Blake Lively for me, as the face of Gucci Première it wasn’t a surprised that she turned to the Italian fashion house for the Met Gala, and I am thrilled that it was so old Hollywood as this is when she really is at her best. Adorned with more than one million paillettes, this custom silk chiffon blush Gucci Première gown was hands down one of my favourite of the night.

I loved how it was dramatic with the cape-like train, sexy with the plunging neckline and nipped in waist, as well as being delicate in the colour and the embellishments. Add to that her gorgeous choice of statement Lorraine Schwartz jewels, her signature side-swept waves and her arm candy for the night hubbie Ryan Reynolds, who looked pretty dapper in a Gucci Made to Order midnight blue velvet Signoria tuxedo, and it makes for a stunning look.

#2 – Karolina Kurkova

I love that the Met Gala always brings out the models onto the red carpet, each year they always wearing the most daring and striking looks, and this year was no different with Karolina Kurkova in this dramatic custom Marchesa ballgown – the structure of the dress and the floral print makes this a work of art and so very Charles James and I adore it. Add the $1 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds that she is wearing and this became a look to beat.

#3 – Amy Adams

Amy Adams really has been on a roll this year with her red carpet looks, her award season was near flawless and this metallic Oscar de la Renta is another incredible look. From the autumn/winter 2014 collection this gown wasn’t custom like most of the other looks but it sure as hell looked like it was made specifically for her. The fit of this strapless gown is impeccable – I love the heart-shaped neckline, the ruched waistline and the dramatic train – and those David Webb earrings really do finish off the look.

#4 – Dita Von Teese

Wow, wow, wow. If ever there was a time for Zac Posen to shine it was at a Charles James themed red carpet, his use of drama and structure was made for this year’s Met Gala and my favourite of his looks was this fun and exquisitely crafted pale pink mermaid gown worn by Dita Von Teese. OK, so I am a little obsessed with the burlesque star but come on doesn’t she look incredible. I love how her use of red in her lippy and clutch really plays up the red hem detailing of the gown. I love this look.

#5 – Charlize Theron

It was hard to select this final spot, thank god I had already done the pink beauties, but I think Charlize Theron in her monochrome Dior Couture gown paired with a tuxedo jacket thrown over her shoulders was just a divine way to honour the White Tie & Diamonds dress code. I’ve made no secret that I love women in tuxedos, I just love it when women rock menswear looks while still being feminine and for me Charlize strikes the right balance here by pairing the tux jacket with a gorgeous flowing dress and those statement Fred Leighton earrings. Gorgeous from head-to-toe, but then again isn’t she always!!!

Honorary Mention – Diane Kruger

I couldn’t miss out my girl crush – Diane Kruger. So her look might not have been one of my favourites, I just felt her embellished ice-white Hugo Boss beauty didn’t stand out as much as some of the other gowns. It was gorgeous though, I especially loved the pleated overlay, the styling of her complementary pearl-white clutch and her forties-style chignon was one of the best hairstyles of the night. Oh and she did have the best arm candy in Joshua Jackson who looked great in a Hugo Boss suit.

Who was your best dressed at the 2014 Met Gala?

Met Gala 2014: Battle Of The Pink

After the disappointed red carpet at last year’s Punk-themed Met Gala I was thrilled that this year’s event was celebrating Charles James the master courtier that really understood drama, sculpture, class, and what makes a great red carpet dress – generally something huge that makes a statement – so I am pleased that the celebs attendees really honoured his vision.

One of my favourite looks had to be Reese Witherspoon in this strapless Barbie-pink Stella McCartney gown. Everything from the colour to the sculptured take on the sweetheart neckline to the way it contoured her body and the slight train, everything about this look is perfection.

If the dress wasn’t enough to make me squeal with excited her Hollywood glamour hair and make-up sure would, the Oscar-winning star was simple flawless, I just loved the matching hot pink lips. I can’t believe that this is Reese’s first time at the Met Gala – this is a great debut look.

There were many hues of pink on the night and two came from Stella McCartney, to complement Reese’s hot pink gown, the gorgeous Kate Bosworth looked divine in this dusky pink slinky spaghetti strap dress. Her statuesque model figure really pulls off this great dress, which has sexy little cut-outs under the bust. But as much as I love the dress it is the styling of the accessories and hair-do that I adore the most – I love that she wasn’t afraid to add sparkle!!!

Combining an element of both Reese’s and Kate’s looks was Emma Stone who look modern, young and fabulous in this striking-yet-simple custom two-piece pink and magenta, colour-block Thakoon ensemble. What I love is that it isn’t a ballgown, I know that was kind of the theme of the night and this look might not quite have cut it, but for me Emma showed a contemporary look that still honoured Charles James with the flowing wrap skirt. Plus with hair like that she definitely had to be featured – love, love, love!!!

One last pink look that caught my attention was Taylor Swift who wore a custom blush pink embellished satin Oscar de la Renta gown teamed with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. While the front of this gown was exquisite, well it was crafted by Oscar de la Renta and embroidered with gold sequins, pearl beads and rose metallic leaves, for me this gown was all about the drama in the back – check out that fabulous bow and train. Stunning in an Old Hollywood glamour kind of way.

It is hard to choose who wins the battle of the pink, but I think Reese in that stunning hot pink number just gets it. Who was your favourite girl in pink?

Can you believe that The Outnet is only 5 years old? For me it seems to have been around for as long as its higher-end, exclusive big sister Net-a-Porter, and it really has come a long way since its days as just a clearance outlet. Yeah it has always been the place to go for a designer bargain but the past 18-months or so I have really found it a go-to site when shopping for any occasion, not only for discounted gear but also for its Iris & Ink in-house collection of luxury staples and its accessories are always so incredible, my last few designer handbags have come from The Outnet.

So to celebrate its 5th Birthday, The Outnet has teamed up with 17 amazing designers including Alexander McQueen, Balmain, Chloé and J.W.Anderson to produce a collection featuring their re-issued, best-loved pieces and I basically want everything!!!

A few weeks ago I got to check out the collection, basically imagined spending away my wedding fund, and styled up a few of my favourite pieces, which is hard when the line also includes Oscar de la Renta, Jason Wu, Nicholas Kirkwood and Haizhen Wang and starts at just £130.

Of course I instantly fell in love with the accessories – the Squeeze It’ patent-leather Alexander McQueen clutch is to-die-for, I love it so much and the £357 price-tag isn’t bag for a classic piece like this, and pair it with those Nicholas Kirkwood panelled suede heels for £318 and you have some killer accessories to jazz up any look. I also loved the classic dark-brown Chloé wedges, a bargain at £225, I think these will be an instant sell-out, as will the statement Oscar de la Renta resin and gold-tone floral necklace, £265.14082714225 ecb54725af o Shopping: The Outnets 5th Birthday Collection %tag

If I had to pick a look from the collection that I would love to wear I think it would have to be the Haizhen Wang black leather jacket, the shape at the back is gorgeous, teamed with the romantic floral-print silk-jacquard Jason Wu dress, paired with those stunning Nicholas Kirkwood heels, and the bold red Oscar de la Renta necklace. I would love to throw in the McQueen clutch but that might just be a little too much!!!

There were also a couple of great looks to wear to a summer wedding for an elegant affair why not try Roland Mouret’s sky-blue O’Hara dress, the colour and fit of this dress is perfection, I really love the folded neck detailing and exposed zip down the back. While a cool, hip wedding you could go for this fun printed silk and moiré pencil Preen by Thornton Bregazzi skirt, team with a white blouse or a crisp white T-shirt and bright accessories.

There are just so many options with this fabulous limited edition collection, but trust me don’t wait around long I think most of these pieces will be instant sell-outs.

Oscars 2014: Jennifer Garner In Oscar de la Renta

Oscars odlr jennifer garner Oscars 2014: Jennifer Garner In Oscar de la Renta %tagWho: Jennifer Garner

Where: At the 86th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, California

Wearing: A silver tulle tiered fringe Oscar de la Renta gown with micro bugle and bead embroidery, teamed with a OdlR silver crown Goa clutch, diamond bracelets and delicate drop earrings from Forevermark

Verdict: When I saw this dress on the red carpet I wasn’t blown away, normally I really love flapper-inspired gowns, but this dress didn’t seem showy enough for the Oscars or for one of my favourite actress who always has an elegance about her.

Don’t get me wrong this beaded gown is nice, exquisitely made, and even though it did shimmer better on the Oscar stage than on the red carpet – this dress just wasn’t enough. Maybe I being very picky, or maybe because there were a handful of other looks that I loved more, for once Jennifer Garner just didn’t make my best dressed list.

But can I say that her side-swept hair and loose waves and flawless make-up was one of the best of the night – simply gorgeous. Plus I loved her bright red nails.

Were you taken with Jennifer Garner’s flapper-inspired look?

Who: Katy Perry

Where: At the 2013 American Music Awards, held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California

Wearing: A black strapless polka dot Oscar de la Renta sheer tulle gown, featuring embroidered flowers from the spring/summer 2014 collection, teamed with Olympia Le-Tan ‘Webster’s New World Dictionary’ book clutch and a statement pink cocktail ring

Verdict: I love how Katy Perry can mix elegance with her quirky personality. This gown is gorgeous, I love the dots and floral appliqués, as well as the sheer tulle overlay to the skirt. But for me it is the styling that I love the most – from the Old Hollywood waves to her hair to the bold matte-red lippy, and most of all that spectacular Olympia Le-Tan box clutch.

I am a little bag/clutch obsessed and my wishlist is filled with these statement Olympia Le-Tan box clutches, they are whimsical, quirky, and gorgeously constructed – but at £1000 they are a little out of my price range, but they are pretty to look at and it is always nice to see them on the red carpet.

You can actually pick up Katy Perry’s ‘Webster’s New World Dictionary’ box clutch for £1749.51 via Farfetch – and I couldn’t resist picking out a few of my other favourites:
