My Style: Shades Of Grey

My-style-grey-coat-5

I’ve spoken about my hunt for the perfect grey winter coat previously, as this year I’m trying to just invest in classic pieces rather than trends, I had all but given up hope when I spied this beauty in the Gap sale, only one left, in my size, was down from £99.99 to £39.99 with another 40 percent off, so for £23.99 I picked up the best bargain I have found in a while, and I’m in love with it.

It ticks a lot of the boxes I had listed for this coat, it is the perfect shade of grey, not too dark, not too light – I am very picky, it has subtle buttons, not over the top shiny ones, it has large pockets to slouch into, oh and carry my phone around, it has a strong collar, and most importantly it falls around knee-length. I have to be honest, listing out all the points it ticks makes me even more surprised that I found it, more so because it was less than £25, it just shows that you can still find a good deal out there.

I promise I won’t only wear this with grey, but I thought it made a fun statement to show off the beauty of the coat, plus it was freezing on our weekend winter walk around Anglesey Abbey that I needed this cosy cable tabbard jumper with roll-neck from Oasis **which FYI is in the sale**, which I love layered over a long sleeve tee or as in this case wearing over a thin black roll-neck for extra warmth. If you are going to work a roll-neck you have to do it twice right?

Finishing up my look is my carry everywhere, bottomless pit of a tote that I picked up from Zara, the best bit about this bag has to be the fact you can reverse it for a contrasting colour, so I have the red showing but could have gone for black. I also have this beauty in the blue and mustard colour, which doesn’t seem to be available anymore. It really is the perfect travel companion, or winter walk buddy to carry my camera, instant camera, mini picnic, and basically my life around with me. Best bit, well other than the price it is only £29.99, has to be the inner zipped pocket, which attaches to the handle to keep it secure, plus you can remove if you like and use in any bag you want.

Sunday walks are becoming a bit of thing in our household, as we are trying to take time away from our busy schedules, enjoy life and being with each other, and help me especially step away from the computer for at least one day a week. Getting outside is one of my favourite things, I really do think when it is so gloomy that you have to take all the good weather days and enjoy them to the max. Plus what’s not to love about walking around a beautiful place hand-in-hand with the one you love. We are lucky as we live in a village in the countryside, just outside Cambridge, so we get town and country, but when we lived in London we used to wander around one of the parks, or stroll down the River Thames, just somewhere that’s pretty and relaxing.

I probably go to Anglesey Abbey just outside Cambridge about four or five times a year, it is such a lovely relaxing place, and I just adore the wandering walk through the gardens, alongside the river and through the woods, plus it changes beautifully with the seasons there is always something new to admire. In February, it is all about the snowdrops, one of my favourite flowers – well they do herald the arrival of spring, plus they are just so elegant and pretty, and Anglesey Abbey has more than 270 species of snowdrops dotted around the place. I know who knew there were so many different kinds.

I also used the occasion to test out my Lomo’Instant, the instant camera from Lomography that we got as our Christmas present from my Mum, as I have wanted an polaroid-style camera for a while. I love digital and snapping away on my phone, I even love the art of editing my images, but there is something fun and more memorable about capturing that moment on instant film and waiting for it to develop. I will be bringing you a more detailed review on the camera soon, which I am loving to capture our first year in marriage memories.

Winter Warmers: Great Coats At January Sale Prices

I always find getting my winter coat one of the most stressful shopping experiences, that is after finding the most perfect pair of jeans – but I have tracked down some beauties in the January sales. From the classic duffle coat, which is my new favourite – I quite like the Paddington Bear look, to another classic the Pea Coat that was seen on the runways at Stella McCartney and YSL. I have also added in some bright coats to brighten up any winter morning, as well as some chic two-tone coats perfect for office.

If you are after a classic, while still being a little quirky you can’t go too wrong with a duffle coat – these are my top three duffles:

1. Lands’ End, Wool Duffle, £110 down from £180, Landsend.co.uk

2. Uniqlo, Wool Duffle, £39.90 down from £89, Uniqlo.com

3. Vicky Smith, Women’s Winter Duffle Coat, £39.99 down from £59.99, Amazon.co.uk

Everyone needs to have a colourful coat in their wardrobe. How about this gorgeous blue maxi from Reiss or the cute 60s dolly coat from Oasis – there is so much choice this season.

1. Oasis, 60s Dolly Coat, £35 was £45, Oasis-Stores.com – I just adore this pastel colour, the swing silhouette and that adorable Princess collar and large buttons.

2. Reiss, Belted Raglan Sleeve Sapphire Coat, £195 was £345, Reissonline.com

3. Wallis, Pink 1923 Fur Trim Mohair Coat, £75 was £150, Wallis.co.uk – brighten up your winter days with this gorgeous coat that has been spotted on Daybreak presenter Kate Garraway.

4. Warehouse, Mustard coat, £35 was £45, Warehouse.co.uk

For a shorter coat style the Pea Coat is a perfect solution. I have selected some varying styles from faux fur collars to a boxy shape – as well as something a little colourful. All will look perfect dressed down with jeans – my favourite has to be the Tartan print from ASOS.

1. ASOS, Tartan Pea Coat With Faux Fur Collar, £34 down from £85, ASOS.com

2. Dorothy Perkins, Red Short Pea Coat, £35 down from £45, DorothyPerkins.com

3. Dorothy Perkins, Fur Collar Boxy Pea Coat, £40 down from £59, DorothyPerkins.com

4. New Look, Collarless Pea Coat, £18 down from £44.99, NewLook.com

Two-tone and monochrome coats seem to be around every year but the two I have chosen will look amazing for the office or a smart function.

1. Debenhams, Principles by Ben de Lisi, Black Colour Block Coat, £89.10 was £99, Debenhams.com

2. French Connection, Colour Block Wonderland Coat, £97.50 was £195, FrenchConnection.com – you can’t go wrong with a military coat mixed in with a retro two-tone vibe.

Happy shopping!!!

Festive Wear: Novelty Knits For Christmas

I am finding it a little weird that my love for festive novelty jumpers isn’t being laughed at this year, rather than everyone feeling it is a little naff, it seems everyone is getting in on the act. A couple of weeks ago I shared the Net-a-Porter collection of designer Christmas jumpers, which I have to admit I am still thinking of splurging on, but I felt that I should look at more affordable options. I am a love of snowflakes, animals, snowmen and even Santa motif jumpers, and I have tracked down some beauties.

I am loving that there are so many swan jumpers about, these are my two favourites:

Intarsia Swan Jumper, £37, Miss Selfridge

Fluffy Swan Intarsia Jumper, £55, Oasis

I think animal jumpers are always my favourites, and I have gone for the cute, the fluffy, the Royal and a little on the weird side!!

Knitted Rabbit Jumper, £39, Miss Selfridge

Ivory Penguin Long Line Jumper, £35, Dorothy Perkins

Joules, Monty Corgi Print Jumper, £69.95, John Lewis

Paul & Joe, Intarsia Sheep Jumper, £135, ASOS

Can’t go too wrong with a reindeer jumper, traditional yet still on trend with the animal jumpers, also mix in reindeer with a fairisle print and you are working a very wintery look.

ASOS Collection, T-shirt with Oversize Reindeer, £18, ASOS – OK technically not a jumper, but still just as cute

Pins & Needles Reindeer Sweatshirt, £35, Urban Outfitters

Ted Baker, Macha Patterned Sweater, £99, Ted Baker

Warehouse, Stag Print Sweater, £35, House of Fraser

This isn’t actually a theme rather the traditional snowflake versus the neon naff, in a good way of course. Both are great Christmas jumpers – which one do you prefer?

Vila Nordic Knitted Snowflake Jumper, £50, ASOS

ASOS Collection, Neon Christmas Jumper, £35, ASOS

But my vote for the best Christmas jumper and the one I think I might wear this Christmas day has to be this gorgeous Panda Jumper from ASOS. I have been a little obsessed with planning a trip to Edinburgh just to see the new Panda’s at the zoo and this will help ease the pain of not being able to go until the New Year. Also it is such a great price at only £30.

Which one is your favourite?

Shopping: Weekend Wishlist – Stars and Sparkle

Inspired by the gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana star print dress from the autumn/winter 2011 collection, seen recently on the September Marie Claire cover and Glamour’s August issue, I have put together my fav star and sparkle items.

1. ASOS Belted Dress with Star Print, £45 – I love this all-over star print with its flirty flare silhouette and the elbow-length sleeves will see you through to autumn.

2. Rebecca Minkoff M.A.C. Bombe, $345 – I am a big RM fan, I carry my MAB with pride, but this cutie is a perfect sparkly clutch and it even comes with exclusive leopard print inside.

3. Oasis Scatter Star Scarf, £18 – you don’t have to go for black and white, this coral scarf is a great way to dip into the trend, team with jeans and a simple tee for great effect.

4. Maggie Angus Rock Star Necklace, £18.99 – couldn’t be a wishlist without jewellery and I adore this rock star necklace featuring a bold charm of a guitar and star.

5. Converse Garden Sequin Hi Trainers from Schuh, £49 – sequins and hi-tops is a great combination, team with your skinny jeans or maxi dress. I just love the way these beauties shimmer!!

6. New Look Starry Canvas Cross Body Bag, £8.99 – this is a cute casual bag, and at that price everyone can enjoy the star trend.

Bag Lust: Three Of My Must-Have Handbags

Last week I went to Forever 21 *post coming soon on my buys* but after dreaming about a bag I stupidly didn’t buy I thought I would blog about the three bags that I completely lusting over. All three bags are so different, but all so me, and I have to buy them!!!

1. Embroidered Aztec Duffle Bag, Forever 21, £29.75

I picked this bag up about four times on my first visit to Forever 21’s new London store but for some reason I talked myself out of buying it. But come on what is not to love about this Aztec-inspired colourful duffle?? I love everything from the colour to the size of this bag, and that buckled front pocket is perfect for storing my train ticket, which I am always loosing in my bag!!

2. 14″ Pink Satchel, The Cambridge Satchel Company, £81

I have been wanting a satchel for a while, and I couldn’t decide between navy, a classic colour such as tan or this pink one, I think bright is the way to go. The Cambridge Satchel’s come in various sizes from 11″, which would make a great clutch, to 15″ perfect for a laptop, as well as various colours. What I also love is you can either have shoulder straps or backpack style, and you can get the satchel embossed – this pink beauty would look amazing with DWS *my initials* in silver lettering!!

3. Colour Block Thatcher Top Handle Bag, Oasis, £30

So as well as a fun casual bag and a funky satchel I also chose a vintage-inspired handbag from Oasis, which would complement any work outfit, and also reminds me of a Celine handbag. Great size, cute handle at the top, and I love turn locks. Classic in design and will go with everything.

Design Time: Your Dream Dress With Oasis and Look

I do love design competitions, I think it is because one of my ultimate dreams is to design my own collection *will never happen, not great at sketching people*, which is probably why this Dream Dress contest from Oasis and Look magazine caught my attention.

It is easy to do, as you don’t have to sketch or even really think too much, you just have to choose the basic dress shape from the sleeves and body to the skirt, the colour, and my favourite bit the embellishments, from cute collars to corsages, or even over-sized bows or glitzy belt detailing.

What you win is pretty impressive, you get your dream dress made and sold in Oasis in time for Christmas, your dress will hit the runway at the LOOK Show during London Fashion Week, of course you will also get VIP tickets to the show, and as well as all that you will also win £1,000 to spend at Oasis. Seriously cool prize.

So here is my entry. Even though I am obsessed with orange at the moment *see image 3 this was my second choice* I feel that this cobalt blue is such a gorgeous colour it works so well with a pleated skirt, and an added cute collars and embellished belt makes it the ultimate Christmas frock, well in my opinion!!!

So what will your dream dress look like? Head over to Oasis-stores.com/dreamdress before August 5 and get creating. The winning design will be picked by a panel and announced on August 12, fingers crossed my beauty wins!!!

Need more inspiration? Well check out my good friend Carina 100’s post, which I buy in a heartbeat!!

Sale Frenzy: My Favourite High Street Finds

1. Warehouse

This floral stripe prom dress is a half-price bargain and is perfect for a summer party. Now only £25.

2. Oasis

I have been after a sheer blouse for a while, and this long-sleeved shirt adorned with a safari inspired spot print is perfect. Pair over a plain vest, and team with jeans or skinny trousers. Did I mention that this beauty is now only £25, down from £40.

3. Miss Selfridge

I have a black satchel that I love and I have been thinking of adding a tan one to my collection, this is a gorgeous 100% leather tooled bag and is now half price at £25.

4. Dorothy Perkins

I think this is my favourite pick of all the sale items I have seen; this orange embroidered sundress is so cute and will look amazing if we ever get a perfect summer!! What makes this 50s style dress has to be the amazing embroidery neck detailing, also the price as it is down from £55 to £30.

5. Schuh

I don’t hide the fact that Schuh is one of my favourite shoe shops, so I just had to include them in my sale picks. I have chosen these granny-inspired beauties, not only because they are 62% off, I know crazy right, but I think that they are the perfect flats. Now only £14.99, the Schuh Kane leather cut-out buckle sandals in stone, have a vintage vibe that I am loving at the moment, and I think they would look great with my cute ankle socks from Tabio.

6. Debenhams

I love Designers at Debenhams especially H! by Henry Holland, and I think this black fifties style cherry skirt would be a perfect addition alongside my cherry print dress. Not a huge saving but it is now under £20.
