Met Gala 2013: The Stars Who Embraced ‘Punk – Chaos To Couture’

Safe to say that a lot of celebrities and designers struggled with the punk fashion theme at this year’s Met Gala, some embraced the studs, fishnets, the safety pins, spikes and wrapped tape look, most went with heavier eye make-up than usual, some really took the theme to town, Madonna I am talking about you, while others just ignored it completely, Gwyneth I am pointing this in your direction, and some even made their hair the focus, oh hello Anne Hathaway’s bleached blonde hair-do!!!

Usually I do individual posts for the Met Gala much like my Oscar coverage, but this year I thought I would just do a round-up of my best dressed looks, and focus more on the stars that actually made punk high-fashion.

As you would expect with it being punk, there was a lot of black, not as much leather as I thought, but lots and lots of black. My favourite black look, and one of my favourites of the night, had to be Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev in Monique Lhuillier, a look featuring a leather and lace halter corseted bodice, black lace leggings and a tulle skirt, which was made perfectly punk with her incredible side-swept hair - seriously she so nailed it!!!

Coming in at a close second to Nina in the all-black category had to be Cara Delevingne in Burberry, as well as doing a great trench coat it seems that the British heritage brand also has a naughty side with this gorgeous and sexy spiked, plunging v-neck gown, which worked perfectly with her smokey dark eyes and sleek hair and her strong eye brows.

There were a lot of other black punk looks that caught my eye - Emma Watson in a revealing wrapped tape Prabal Gurung gown, Jennifer Lawrence in a polished Dior look, and Diane Kruger in Chanel, which was more grunge than punk but I did like the pink dip-dyed touch to her ponytail and spiked clutch. Then there were the blonde crop bombshells – Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway – who both looked incredible.

Sporting a slinky black mesh Marc Jacobs gown that Kate Moss has worn, I really liked Miley’s commitment to the theme and I think I am the only one who actually loved her OTT spiked hair. In contrast, Anne’s new blonde hair-do was more sleek and worked perfectly with her very revealing, gorgeously embellished vintage Valentino gown from 1992, which totally makes up for her Oscar look. I love that both totally went for it and I think it paid off.

But there was one look that completely blew me away and that had to be Sarah Jessica Parker wearing an incredible Philip Treacy mowhawk, a dark and moody paint-splatted printed Giles gown and incredible Christian Louboutin boots – now that is how you do punk fashion!!!

Met Gala 2012: Counting Down To The Red Carpet

RosieBurberry1 500x888 Met Gala 2012: Counting Down To The Red Carpet %tag

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Burberry last year

Tonight is one of my favourite fashion events of the year. I love spying on the fashion of the celebrity-pack front rows at fashion week, and the Oscars will always be my favourite award show, but tonight is the Costume Institute Gala to celebrate their annual exhibition, last year was all about Alexander McQueen, and this year the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be hosting ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations’ and you can expect the very best in fashion, film, music, and TV to be hitting the red carpet, which will be live-streamed for the first time, in the most amazing designs, most being custom-made just for tonight.

I’ve been tweeting all the #MetGala news as it has been coming in but I thought I would do a round-up post as a count down to the main event, which starts live-streaming from 11.30pm, UK time:

Prada – have only confirmed they will be taking Gwyneth Paltrow and Carey Mulligan, her first red carpet since her wedding

Dolce & Gabbana – will be dressing Scarlett Johansson

Giambattista Valli – have confirmed they will be dressing six guests, and the first to be announced is Amy Adams who will be wearing a one-shoulder Couture gown

Valentino – will be taking Sarah Jessica Parker *scream – can’t wait to see her gown*, as well as Brit Marling, and Lily Collins

Donna Karan - one of the first to announced who they will be dressing, and Donna Karan has made custom couture gowns for Ashley Greene, same as last year, and Vampire Diaries star, Nina Dobrev

Coco Rocha – OK not a fashion house, but I love her, and she has confirmed that she will be wearing a vintage yellow and fuchsia Givenchy jumpsuit, which was owned by Elizabeth Taylor, that she won at auction in December. I know some were hoping she would wear Zac Posen, but I am looking forward to seeing this jumpsuit.

Balmain - confirmed via their new Twitter that Olivier Rousteing will be accompanied by one of my favourite models Joan Smalls

Louis Vuitton – will be worn by Dakota Fanning, will she shine as much as Isabel Lucas did last year?

Emilio Pucci - will be taking Renée Zellweger, which totally floored me when I read on Twitter, can’t wait to see this gown

Anthony Vaccarello - is taking model Anja Rubik

Escada – has tapped Heidi Klum, who has announced that she will be wearing a barely there, very lacy number, as well as Emma Roberts

Erdem – is taking Arizona Muse

Rachel Zoe – will be dressing Karolina Kurkova, another gown I can’t miss

Thakoon – is taking Christina Ricci

Proenza Schouler: Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez will taking actress Isabel Lucas

Balenciaga - will be taking Kristen Stewart, I am imagine something black, with studs, accompanied by a quirky pose – what do you think?

Michael Kors – will be dressing actresses Jessica Alba and Hilary Swank

Roland Mouret - will be taking model Doutzens Kroes.

Joseph Altuzarra - will be taking singer Lana Del Ray, and I am hoping she comes with a smile

Alexander Wang - will be dressing the main entertainment, rapper Azealia Banks

Jason Wu - will be walking the red carpet with model Karlie Kloss

Haider Ackerman - will be accompanied by model Constance Jablonski

Oscar de la Renta – have tweeted about at least two fittings but I have only heard about Lauren Santo Domingo

Alexander McQueen – last year was all about McQueen and Sarah Burton is in town and will be attending, but no confirmation on who she will be dressing. I had hoped for Sarah Jessica Parker but Valentino snapped her up

Stella McCartney – I am hoping this isn’t just a Twitter rumour, but word is that she will be dressing Cameron Diaz

Tom Ford – I haven’t heard which female celebrities he will be dressing but Justin Timberlake will look dapper in a Tom Ford suit

Marchesa – will be represented but no confirmation on who

I have also got confirmation that Alexa Chung, Katherine McPhee, Emily Blunt *possibly wearing Calvin Klein*, Gisele Bundchen *rumour has it she will wear Versace or Balmain*, Sofia Vergara *maybe as Vera Wang’s guest???*, Rashida Jones, I am sure the Gossip Girls will be out in force, and fingers cross Diane Kruger will also be making appearance, I am hoping she will be Prada.

Will be staying up and watching the live-stream?

Met Ball 2012: So What Are You Doing May 7?

Ashley Greene in Donna Karan at last year's event

It isn’t long until the Met Ball 2012, just less than two weeks, but I am already getting excited about it after finding some celebrities have already decided what they will be wearing, and at the moment even though Miuccia Prada is co-chair, it seems Donna Karan is going to make an entrance as she has already signed up Ashley Greene and Nina Dobrev to wear her designs.

So if I wasn’t excited enough, I then hear the news today that this year’s Met Ball red carpet will be live-stream, yeah I hear you all cry, which means you all know what I will be doing on May 7 – I’ll be live tweeting/blogging and generally getting OTT excited at all the gorgeous gowns from the hours of 11:30pm to 1:30am, it is like the Oscars night all over again!!!

Event sponsors Amazon, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Vogue, will all be live-streaming arrivals on their websites, and all the stars will be interviewed by William Norwich and model Elettra Wiedemann, which means it is going to be a lot more high-brow than my usual E! coverage!

So who can we expect? Other than Ashley Greene and Nina Dobrev who are both guests of Donna Karan, I am expecting greatness from co-chair Carey Mulligan who will probably be working Prada, as well as models Coco Rocha and Crystal Renn who are regulars to the Met Ball, and I am so hoping that the rumours that Jennifer Lopez is to perform as she always knows how to work a red carpet.

Last year I loved so many of the looks from Rihanna’s sexy Stella McCartney gown giving Rosie Huntington-Whiteley a run for her money in her rose silk Burberry gown, and then there was the gorgeous Isabel Lucas who took my best dressed accolade in that exquisite pleated coral Louis Vuitton gown and that amazing gold headpiece. Just thinking about last year makes me excited – I have a feeling that it is going to be a great night.

So questions is – will you be joining me and staying up to watch?
