Blogger Challenge: Matalan Style Project – LBD

So I am not known as a style blogger, I give it a go and I have to admit I quite enjoy showing off my style posts on here and on WIWT, but I was still a little shocked when Matalan asked me to take part in their Blogger Style Project for December. Some of my favourite bloggers have taken part before including the Online Stylist and A Daisy Chain Dream, both of which were winners, so I thought what the hell it will be fun.

I have to admit I knew before the other bloggers were revealed I wasn’t going to come out of this challenge a winner, I am not known for my OMG amazing style, I am a very much ‘I like what I like’ type of gal, but it was fun getting dressed up.

So how does the style project work? Well Matalan picked the theme, they gave me £50 to spend on a whole outfit, and then they put my style snap up against three fab bloggers. So for December the theme is Little Black Dress, perfect for me as I love a classic black dress, the downside is however I am up against the amazing Amy aka WolfWhistle, Jade who is one-half of The Style Rawr!, and the adorable Claire from Jazzpad. Seriously tough competition!!!

For me choosing a Little Black Dress wasn’t that much of a stretch, I have to admit I do love black, what was frustrating was that I couldn’t afford accessories. You see £50 for a party outfit isn’t a lot, even at Matalan, and it didn’t help when I had my heart set on these fab velvet bow and glitter platform heels only £20 but took a big chunk of my budget.

I paired these fab shoes with one of my favourite styles pleats, and this Pleated Occasion Dress was perfect for me, but at £28 it did mean I didn’t have much left except to get tights – well it is December I needed to keep warm!!

So what do you think – like my style? A little on the boring side I expect for a style challenge, I would have loved to add a brightly coloured clutch and a statement necklace and ring – but hey I worked with what I had.

Fancy voting for me? I am sitting in last place at the moment with only two votes, so any pity votes are most certainly welcome *joking*!! All you need to do is head on over to Matalan’s blog and add a comment with the name of the girl that you think deserves to win the LBD challenge.

Daily Shop: Matalan Horse Print Playsuit

If you only buy one thing today – can I recommend this fun and flirty playsuit from Matalan with an all over horse print. Cute and flattering for the warmer days, and come winter you can add tights and a chunky cardigan.

Did I tell you the best bit – this gorgeous playsuit is only £18.

Hot Trend: Palazzo Pants – Trouser Of The Season

ASOS - £40

So for spring/summer 2011 you may have noticed that skinny is out and wide is in, and when you are looking at Palazzo Pants, the wider the better!! However, when you suggest wide trousers, I think most are a little scared to give them a go as they think they are going to make them look bigger than they are, however Palazzo Pants are surprisingly flattering.

Seen at many SS11 shows, from floral beauties at D&G to gorgeous pleated ones at Richard Nicoll. The high street has ones to suit everyone at the moment.

Still feeling unsure? Well follow these tips and embrace this fluid style – trust me you will love it, from the swish as you walk to the comfort.

Shoes: Palazzo is all about the 7os vibe, so embrace it with sticking to wedges or chunky heeled shoes, go for height and they will make your legs look like they go on for miles.

Tuck in or belt up: It is all about defining your waist to balance your sihouette, so think pussy-bow blouses, vest and camisole two-pieces, or just go for a simple tee tucked in.

Finishing touches: To take off the summer chill pair with a leather jacket or a cropped blazer for a more tailored look. I would also recommend chunky bangles and jewellery for a great 70s look.

Top picks: My favourite has to be the ASOS Palazzo Pants (above), £40 –  I love the high waist design with double buttoned waistband, added together with the pleated front they reeally are divine. What makes them even better, well the price for one very reasonable at £40, but they also come in three different colours: Withered Rose (pictured), Jade and Olive.

Dorothy Perkins - £35

Dots aren’t going away any time soon, so why not pick up these black spot palazzo trousers from Dorothy Perkins for £35.

River Island - £34.99

When it comes to floral prints I think these River Island blue floral print belted palazzo trousers are one of my favourites, only £34.99, and comes with a perfect belt. Wear with a black tee for simple-yet-comfortable.

Matalan - £16

If the River Island aren’t wider enough, or even bolder enough in the flower stakes then you have to go for these great value ones from Matalan. These Papaya print trousers are only £16.

New Look - £28.99

But if like me you need to work you way up to bold prints, check out New Look who have some amazing block colour ones. My pick has to be these Crepe Wide Leg Trousers in magenta, only £28.99, and they even come in coral.

So which ones are you going to go for?

AW11 Press Day: Matalan Fuses Old With New

Last week I fell in love with the Matalan autumn/winter 2011 collection, from the 60’s ‘Modern Retro’ pieces to the bright colours of the ‘Seventies’, and the my favourite items had to be the various knits from the ‘Global Mix’ with its layering, chunky knits and clashing prints.

Global Mix is a great collection, with hand crafted patterns and designs, it is all inspired by winter travels mixed in with some D&G influences with the alpine knits, tartan, Aztec shawls and animal prints. Anyone who knows me won’t be surprised that the knitted range of winter warmers was top choice for me, as I am always cold, and this collection will certainly keep me warm.

My favourite jumper has to be this squirrel print, gorgeous, quirky and has to be mine – this is one of those pieces that I went back to a number of times.

Another favourite had to be this cardigan/coat, with its fur trim, pompoms and hood. From the 1973 Heritage collection, I couldn’t believe that this winter warmer is only £35, bargain, gorgeous, and will be mine.

The Modern Retro, a beatnik inspired story with a quintessentially English twist, is a great collection of 60’s block shifts, peter pan collars, and monochrome. My favourite piece has to be this bell sleeved stallion print shift dress with contrast collar and hem; I love peter pan collars and animal prints, add in long-sleeves and I am sold!! Also did I mention that this gorgeous dress is only £25? I know bargain.

As with a lot of autumn/winter 2011 collections that I have seen the 70’s is still a huge inspiration. I love bright colours *even if I am normally seen in black*, and this Matalan line is gorgeous. I love the retro silhouettes, the clashing prints, and the acid brights. My favourite piece was this teal five-point star print dress, with its voluminous sleeves and tie-neck detailing.

For some there is a hesitance when discussing shopping in Matalan, but seriously the past few collections I have seen the design team really is going from strength-to-strength. In my opinion, hunt down your local store, and be prepared to be surprised!!
