Cover Loving: February Magazines Are All About Actresses

You can tell that it is award season as all the major magazines have gorgeous actresses gracing their covers. Vanity Fair has gone for Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, Harper’s Bazaar have an elegant looking Anne Hathaway, Glamour UK goes girlie with Emma Stone, and Victoria Beckham’s designs score two covers with both Scarlett Johansson and Kristen Stewart wearing white on the covers of ELLE UK and V Magazine.

My favourite has to be the gorgeous Jennifer Lawrence sporting her natural blonde locks in a fun cover for Vanity Fair. Shot by Ellen von Unwerth there is a softness in Jennifer’s face on the cover that is transformed into a complete vixen for the accompanying editorial and I love it. Sometimes Jennifer can be a little too serious – this cover is fun and relaxed and definitely brightened up my day.

Vanity-Fair-jennifer-lawrenemma-stone-glamour-magazineIt was close but my girl crush Emma Stone is my second favourite with her girlie cover for Glamour UK shot by Matthias Vriens-McGarth. Wearing a D&G botanical floral print, Emma is perfect for Glamour’s audience, I just wish they had gone for a different colour for the font – the orange is working for me. Anyone else was thinking this cover looks a little familiar? Well you would be right as a very similar shot from the same shoot was used for Glamour US back in May 2011.

Next up has to be Scarlett Johansson’s subscriber cover for ELLE UK’s February issue wearing a Burberry coat shot by Rankin. I like the newsstand version with her working a Victoria Beckham microbrush and lace dress but only from the ankles up, I am not loving those runway Manolo Blahnik for Victoria Beckham shoes. The subscriber cover is intriguing – I love the messy hair and seeing only one eye – Scarlett looks beautiful.

It was hard to decide who came next between Anne and Kristen, I am not blown away by either cover to be honest, but I think Harper’s Bazaar just takes it because of that gorgeous crystal-embellished Giorgio Armani strapless gown – all I can say about the rest is does Anne have a lazy eye?

Kristen doesn’t fair much better for me on V Magazine’s Spring 2013 issue. It isn’t that I don’t like the styling, the white Victoria Beckham vest with a black bra peeking out is fine, the make-up is grundy as you would expect from the Twilight actress – the problem I have is that I feel I have seen it all before – the wet hair, the moody look, the dark make-up around the eyes. Anyone else a little bored?

Twilight – Breaking Dawn Part 2: Kristen Stewart Wows In Zuhair Murad

Who: Kristen Stewart surrounded by her men, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner

Where: At the London premiere of Twilight – Breaking Dawn Part 2

Wearing: A black sheer lace embroidered Zuhair Murad jumpsuit with an open back from the designer's autumn/winter 2012 couture collection

Verdict: There is a new found confidence with Kristen that is refreshing and this promo tour she really had embraced her sexy side and this is another wow moment, but unlike the LA premiere I actually prefer the peek-a-boo sheer top to the jumpsuit than the skirt of the gown.

The delicate embroidered detail is exquisite and makes this jumpsuit for me – I actually think this look rivals Emma Stone's Elie Saab tuxedo-style jumpsuit – what do you think?

Care about what the hunks were wearing? Well team Jacob won it for me with that sexy violet two-button notch-lapel Z Zegna suit, it was close though as team Edward looks just as good in Burberry.

So which team is best dressed for you? Bella, Jacob or Edward?

Twilight – Breaking Dawn Part 2: Kristen Stewart In Zuhair Murad

Who: Kristen Stewart

Where: At the Los Angeles premiere of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in California

Wearing: A nude strapless Zuhair Murad gown featuring lace and chiffon panelling and a corseted bodice from the autumn/winter 2012 collection, teamed with a Cartier bracelet

Verdict: I was expecting something short, black, and tight, not feminine, romantic and sexy, and while I love the colour, the silhouette of the gown, and that she stepped out of her comfort zone I am just not loving this look a 100%.

For me this gown would have been perfection if the skirt had a light layer underneath, everything about this gown is divine, I just can’t help but think the nude is a little too much – what do you think?

What I do absolutely adore about this look has to be her old Hollywood-inspired hair, her side-swept locks makes such a statement and her bold lippy is just divine.

What do you think of Kristen’s look?

Teen Choice Awards: Kristen Stewart Shines In Roberto Cavalli

Who: Twilight actress Kristen Stewart

Where: At the Teen Choice Awards 2012 held in Los Angeles, California

Wearing: A silk printed Roberto Cavalli blazer from the Resort 2013 collection, teamed with a grey tee and leather trousers also by Roberto Cavalli, and finishing off her look were black Christian Louboutin heels

Verdict: Yeah, Kristen embraced her tomboy vibe and wore a rock-chick look on the red carpet, or should I say backstage as she didn’t seem to make the red carpet, but either way I am so happy. We’ve seen her do awkward, quirky, and a little bit scary on the red carpet, but this look is by far the most comfortable I have seen her at an award ceremony, granted it was the tame Teen Choice Awards they’d love her in a bin bag, but still it was good to see.

What makes this masculine look work for me has to be that statement Roberto Cavalli blazer, I love the print, but I love the black lapels even more – this is one hot jacket and goes perfectly with her leather trews.

Adding a girlie vibe to her look was a cute side plait, which kind of reminded me of Alice Dellal, which in turn made me wonder where she has disappeared too – something for another post I am thinking, as well as her fierce Louboutins, her love of wearing Converse could have completely ruined this look.

I bet Kristen’s stylist was loving that all the other young actresses went for vibrant colours and fit and flare style dresses as she really did stand out when reviewing the fashion of this year’s Teen Choice Awards.

So what do you think – did you like Kristen’s style?[Pics: courtesy of Roberto Cavalli]

Beauty: Kristen Stewart’s First Fragrance Campaign

After all the excitement of Blake Lively’s first fragrance campaign for Gucci I had totally forgotten that the first image for Kristen Stewart’s were due this week. I have to admit, when I first heard back in January that Kristen was due to be the new face of Balenciaga’s latest fragrance, ‘Florabotanica’, I wasn’t surprised Nicolas Ghesquière does love her, but I wasn’t wowed by the idea either, but I was intrigued to see what the imagery would look like.

Unlike most fragrance adverts this isn’t sexy or alluring rather odd and Kristen’s pose looks slightly uncomfortable and out-of-place among the metal floral structures. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Balenciaga is aiming this new fragrance at a younger crowd, so I am think the aim of this Steven Meisel campaign is just to be cool, and it does quite a good job of that with Kristen rocking a gorgeous OTT floral dress.

It is quite a futuristic-psychedelic advert that I kind of feel needs to be accompanied by a dark and moody soundtrack, which of course is very much Kristen’s territory from her Twilight background, so it makes me wonder if we might see a short film to launch the fragrance in September like with Blake’s Gucci Premiere – now that will be an interesting head-to-head!!!

The fragrance itself is inspired by the 2008 collection that featured “nasty” and “nice” flowers, and the composition of notes of vetiver, amber and caladium-leaf accord, a hybrid rose, carnation and mint accord is suppose to offer a floral character that is very seductive and it’s flowers will not be just beautiful, but also very dangerous. I am serious intrigued and so want to smell it – sounds amazing.

The fragrance hits select stores in the US, Canada and France come September – but for some reason the UK date wasn’t announced – hopefully not long after the initial launch.

Cinema: The Costumes Of Snow White & The Huntsman

When it comes to fashionable movies I know everyone is waiting for The Great Gatsby at the end of the year but last week I finally went to see Snow White & The Huntsman and I was blown away by the costumes from Colleen Atwood, the costume designer behind Chicago, Alice in Wonderland, and Memoirs of a Geisha.

For most I am sure Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron are enough of a pull to see this film, but I have to admit with it coming soon after Julia Roberts’ Mirror Mirror I was a little dubious about seeing another version of this fairytale. It did however surprise me, there is a darkness to the story that is played out perfectly by Charlize as the sexy-yet-evil queen, who has the most spectacular of wardrobes, and even Kristen as Snow White was impressive, rather less of a princess and more of a Joan of Arc character, which I think is probably easier for her to pull off. With the evil queen and the heroine sorted, the story just needed a hunky protector in the form of Chris Hemsworth, great eye candy, and then you have the very funny but badass dwarfs, who kind of had a touch of Narnia-meets-Games of Thrones about them.

Don’t get me wrong this film is so geared to the teen market, why else would they cast Kristen, but what I took away most was the spectacular creations from Colleen Atwood. Of course all eyes are on Charlize as Ravenna, the sorceress haute-couture queen who has a fear of her mortality, which is played out perfectly in her costumes as they have a lot of death about in the detailing from the use of bones, beetle wings, and rooster feathers – kind of reflective of her own rotting mortality during the film and they looked spectacular on the big screen.

Of course her crown is important, it is iconic, and I love that even though the film is completely different from the Disney version, the pointy structure of the crown is inspired by the animated version, plus it feels a little Roman as well to me and I love the addition of the jewels.

The most spectacular of her gowns has to be her wedding dress, with its medieval-meets-couture runway vibe. It truly is a statement gown with its architectural shoulders that seem to be made from bones, to the embroidered and lace gown that kind of made me think of peeling skin, and fits perfectly into the evil queen’s vanity.

I also have to quickly gush about all the jewellery, everything from the earrings to the crowns, and the very cool talon-like finger-caps, the detail of each look is incredible, even more so when you realise that every piece, some 2,000 costumes were all custom-made – now that is a huge job.

Of course it wouldn’t be right to talk about the costumes of Snow White and not include the princess herself played by Kristen. I actually loved what Snow White was wearing it was more rock-chick than Disney princess, which worked better with the dark and action-packed script. There is still a regal look to her outfit, even though she has been held captive in the tower, I love the puff sleeves and the metal detailing around the corset.

Snow White doesn’t get as many costume changes as the evil queen so she is in this look for most of the film so to adapt to her surroundings and the action, the Huntsman cuts of part of her dress and makes it into a tunic over leather trousers – very Joan of Arc, which continues when she heads into battle in her custom-made sculpted armour.

Seriously I loved this film, granted we all know the story but this is action-packed and you won’t be disappointed. If you just see it for the costumes trust me it is worth it, I could seriously go on, and on about the wonderful work of Colleen Atwood I love every outfit that graced the screen. When researching the costumes I came across this fab video of the Academy award-winning costume designer discussing creating the costumes, it is really insightful and actually makes me want to see the film again!!!

Cover Loving: Kristen Stewart For Vanity Fair

Finally a Kristen Stewart cover that I can love. This is her first solo cover for Vanity Fair and it is a blinder, I am loving the uber-glam Kristen in that gorgeous Giorgio Armani Privé gown, she looks incredible and for the first time she actually looks relaxed. I have to ask was the Pomeranian dog really needed?

Shot by Mario Testino in Paris there is a gorgeous high fashion editorial accompanying this stunning cover, from Kristen wearing haute couture to the ballet, posing with the striking dancer Jérémie Bélingard **check out his incredible eyes, dreamy** in a Jean Gaultier corset, and of course the jewellery is well represented with gorgeous Fabergé diamonds and emeralds.

Maybe it is the Paris backdrop, of the incredible couture designs, but come on have you ever seen Kristen look so good in a magazine before?
