My Style: Styling A Blanket Scarf & Long Cardigan

My-style-asos-cardigan-2January is nearly done with and it took over 20 days to carve out some time with my husband, which in case you haven’t noticed isn’t getting old, I love saying it. With work, unexpected trips up North to see family, and general life we haven’t had much time for just the two of us, or to just have fun, so it was important on a rare free weekend to do something other than chores, cleaning, or sitting on the sofa catching up with TV.

We like doing cultural things whether it’s visiting grand historical estates, art galleries or museums, it is one of the things I love about living in the UK there are so many, and lots are free to visit, and even though we have been living in the Cambridge area for around 8 years we’ve never been to the Fitzwilliam Museum. I was trying to think why, after we had been and enjoyed it so much, and I think it has something to do with the fact for the past few years it has mainly been covered in scaffolding while it was renovated on the outside.

The museum has a great collection, from gorgeous pottery to Egyptian artefacts, and an impressive art portfolio including Monet, Renoir, and Degas, all favourites of mine, and I really could have sat there all afternoon taking in the masterpieces.

Fitzwilliam is more than just its collection, the building itself is a work of art with its Corinthian-style columns, ornate detailing, and the light coming from the exquisite skylights, it really is one of those places that you can’t help but get lost in the beauty. I think I could come here every day and find new corners to admire and fall in love with, I think I might have found my new writing spot for when I am feeling less inspired.

I can also recommend the little cafe situated in the middle of the museum, not only does it look so pretty drench in sunlight from the large skylights, but it also brews a perfect pot of fresh leaf tea and sells the most delicious cakes. I was all adventurous, well it was a date, and tried my first ever Duke of Cambridge Tart, something I had never heard of with a raisin and cherry filing on a chewy, toffee-like base. I’ve added it to my recipe search as I think I am going to have to try and bake a batch up.

It is always harder I think deciding what to wear at the weekend, I find it hard to not just opt for jeans and a jumper, but I am having a new love affair with cardigans, short, tight, oversized, and this long beauty from Asos is a current favourite, and it is in the sale. There is something about wrapping up, without looking too bulky, while still be warm that totally appeals to me and this oversized cardigan, which I would recommend getting in a size down unless you want it really baggy is perfect as you can see fit a regular jumper underneath and I think it works perfectly with my blanket scarf.

I along with everyone else in the fashion world is obsessed with Burberry’s monogrammed ponchos, if only I was a runway model or won the lottery, I have a larger blanket wrap that I generally utilise when in the car or running through an airport, but this cute blue and red patterned scarf is perfect I have found to layer over my cardigan and looks good with a belt to cinch in my waist, which really does help to not look too bulky, well I hope so.

Have you tried out the blanket scarf and long cardigan trend yet? I think the trick is if you are wearing lots of layers on top, I have one t-shirt, one jumper, one cardigan and then a scarf on here, to go skinny on the bottom half to balance it out, so these skinny jeans made the perfect addition to finish off this casual look.

My Style: Finding The Perfect Leather Dress

My-Style-Outnet-8

I have a list of wardrobe essentials that I am constantly trying to perfect, whether it is finding that white shirt that fits perfectly, or the softest cashmere jumper, or even that hero pair of skinny jeans that never loses its shape. One thing on that list that I haven’t got close to finding, well until I spotted this Iris & Ink beauty on The Outnet, had to be a leather dress.

I am pretty fussy, it had to be nearer to knee-length than mini-skirt, it had to be roomy enough that I could wear all day and still eat, it had to be quality, and most importantly it had to be more tailored than rock-chick and I definitely feel that the Aria Iris & Ink belted suede and leather dress ticks all those boxes.

I love that the combination of leather and suede really does make this a more contemporary take on the leather dress, it makes it a lot more comfortable to wear and I adore that you can nip in the waist with the belt, which I switched up for a skinny leather number as the dress was a little big the suede belt it came with wasn’t working for me.

The Iris & Ink collection at The Outnet has long been a favourite of mine, it is basically filled with timeless, quality wardrobe essentials and I love that I was able to style up this beauty for my blog. One of the areas that has been expanding for the label has to be the accessories, first it was oversized pouches to style up as a cool clutch and this season they have added some gorgeous leather pieces, my favourite being the ‘Camden’ Iris & Ink leather backpack, which you can wear as a backpack or as a bucket handbag, dependant on how you feel and what you are wearing.

There is a lot of love at the moment for bucket bags, they are everywhere, and what I love about this one is its versatility and how it works two trends – backpack and bucket bag, plus it is made from the dreamiest of leathers. It is also super roomy, I do love a bag that can carry all my stuff plus my big SLR. After test driving this beauty I don’t think any other bucket bag will quite cut it, I love that when it is super heavy that you can just change it up and wear it as a backpack. I think this beauty is a fashion week must.

Are you on the hunt for something off your wardrobe essentials list?

My Style: Pretty In Pink

My-style-next-lace-dress-6

A couple of weeks ago the lovely girlies at Next invited me and a few of their favourite bloggers to see The Bodyguard for a girl’s night out and I wore this beauty of a pink lace dress. I was having so much fun, munching at STK London, catching up with my friends and then singing along to Whitney Houston’s greatest hits, boy can Alexandra Burke sing, that I totally forgot to get an outfit post. A crime I know for a fashion blogger!!!

What I love about this beauty of a dress is that it can be dressed up or down and it still looks so pretty, I think it is because the silhouette is so flattering and the lace is delicate and fun. To see The Bodyguard, I dressed it up with a statement necklace, a cute clutch and strappy black heels, but I love that it works just as well teamed with pumps for a day wandering around Cambridge.

I think the reason this dress works for a Sunday walk after brunch is the accessories, a pop of blue just works perfectly with this pretty pale pink hue. I love that it adds a touch of fun, which means that the addition of the denim pumps don’t seem too casual. Plus I love any reason to wear my new blue mini Links of London friendship bracelet that Paulie got me for my birthday, it works perfectly with my Shore Projects watch.

Do you have a summer dress that you love to dress up and down?

My Style: All About The Coat

my-style-boohoo-coat-3

So I have been a little slack on my outfit posts of late, first it was because I went away and style snaps and living on a boat didn’t really go hand-in-hand, then there was more than a week when I never came home while it was still light enough for a picture, then I had to contend with the rainy weather at the weekend, and my constant problem finding someone to actually capture my look.

Finally this weekend the weather was actually bright, well for most of it, I managed to rope my boyfriend into taking my picture and it was cold enough to wrap up in my new favourite coat from Boohoo’s Boutique collection.

I first spotted this coat at the Boohoo dinner I went to back in August – I fell in love with it because it kind of works three trends in one – checks, biker style and furry and it is super cosy to wear. I was kind of scared about working the checks trends, mainly because I think you have to get the right size check for it to work, so when I saw this half-check-half black biker-style coat I couldn’t resist, especially as it has a cute furry faux-fur collar to give it a vintage vibe.

As this coat does all the talking I paired my beauty with my go-to Donna Ida jeans, an oversized black jumper, and my new cut-out ankle boots from Bank’s Blonde + Blonde, trust me you will see more of these beauties as the season goes on but I couldn’t resist taking them out for a spin this weekend.

Have you fallen in love with wrapping up warm in a coat or are you already wishing for spring?

My Style: An Outfit To Make My Glasses Shine

My-style-swag-and-stare-2

On Saturday my new Swag & Stare glasses arrived so to celebrate I thought I would wear an outfit to show off my new specs. As I went for the Gramercy in red I decided to wear my new red River Island smock dress, which is kind of perfect for this in-between weather we are kind of having, as it looks good layered up with a chunky cardigan and paired with biker boots for a casual weekend look, and it matches perfectly with my red and black frames.

As we had friends over this weekend we went into Cambridge to enjoy the gorgeous sunshine, yes for most of the day it was warm, the sun was shining, and it was actually spring-like, it sadly changed towards the end of the day into rain showers, but hey a couple of hours of sunshine is better than none.

While in Cambridge we just had a chilled out day, took a walk along the river, saw some fluffy baby geese, messed around on a huge log, oh and nearly fell off, wandered around Corpus Christi College, so I could admire the architecture, oh and stopped now and then for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks.

Is there any better way to spend a lovely sunny day than catching up with friends over a walk and a few drinks?My-style-river-island-1 My-style-river-island-dress My-style-swag-and-stare Corpus-christi-college-2 Corpus-christi-college-1 swag-and-stare- My-style-river-island-2

My Style: Feeling Blue But So In Love

OOTD-Blue-and-in-Love

With the recent cold snap I feel like I have been wearing the same outfit, generally jeans, more often than not my biker boots, and nearly always a very warm jumper – today’s look isn’t that dissimilar to be honest but I decided to mix it up with a bright blue jacket I found hanging on the coat hooks by the door.

Don’t worry it is my jacket, just one that sadly has been forgotten about this winter, and I am not sure why as I love the colour and the fit. On a cold day like today it really did brighten my mood.

OOTD-Blue-and-in-Love-9

Today’s look is very blue – blue coat, jeans, sweater, scarf, Cambridge Satchel bag and even the gloves that my Mum knitted me – everything is a different shade of blue, well except for that red t-shirt peeking through underneath the sweater, my gold jewellery and black boots.

To balance out the blue feeling I decided to go for a soppy love vibe with my Zoe Karssen LOVE jumper that I picked up off The Outnet, I just love her printed slogans, I seem to be building a collection of her t-shirts, but this sweater is laid-back lux to perfection – super comfortable, so warm and totally me!!!

Finishing up my look are my cute new love heart initial bracelets and my love ring that I picked up at the Claire’s gifting suite at The Apartment during London Fashion Week.

Harriet’s: A Cambridge Cream Tea

Today, was the best remedy for such a shocking week, a day spent exploring Cambridge with friends, it was just such a fun and enjoyable day. We didn’t do anything too strenuous except walk for miles, we took in the sites, admired the architecture, took lots of photographs, climbed a tower, chuckled at people attempting to punt, and finished off the day with the best afternoon tea I have had in years. Thanks Harriet’s for finishing off a fab day.
