Critics’ Choice Awards: My Five Favourite Red Carpet Looks

Critics-choice-angelina-jol

So the award season is certainly in full swing, which I am loving, first up was the Golden Globes that was semi-disappointing this year, but thankfully this year’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards really did make up for some of the boring looks from last Sunday, I am talking about you Emily Blunt!!!

I know I normally do individual red carpet posts, but as I am late on this as I was actually travelling when the awards were taking place, I thought I would just share my five favourite looks, and trust me they are all beautiful.

First up we have Angelina Jolie who looked like a million dollars in her silver silk Atelier Versace gown. Granted this isn’t an original look, but if it isn’t broken why fix it comes to mind, but hey at least it isn’t black. I love how this gown flows and how it adds curves to Angie’s tiny frame with its fluty sleeves, draped bodice and plunging neckline. This gown is perfection with a real Hollywood movie star appeal and I adore it.

Critics-Choice-Diane-KrugerNext is Diane Kruger in a dramatic blue and white floral print strapless Naeem Khan gazar gown from the pre-fall 2015 collection. I love Diane’s red carpet style but this is elegance on another level, I really love the stunning china-blue print, even if some of my Twitter followers felt it looked like a vintage plate design. I am not sure if I prefer this look to her gorgeous Golden Globes Emilia Wickstead gown but it is still beautiful and such a great award ceremony look.

Then we have Michelle Monaghan showing off her sexy-yet-elegant side in this stunning black Elie Saab gown from the pre-fall 2015 collection. Normally one to showcase colour on the red carpet, I am so pleased that she opted for the understated black, as I just feel that with the sheer lace bodice and slits to the skirt that it just works better in black. The fit of this gown is just perfect on her as well, and I love that she wore her hair up and kept her make-up to a minimum. This is simply glamorous.

For my fourth look I have gone for Jennifer Aniston as not only was I shocked that she wasn’t wearing black, I love that she took a fashion risk and went for a sexy Gucci tuxedo in a gorgeous burnt-sienna hue. I was disappointed with her yawn of a gown to the Golden Globes and I have to wonder why she didn’t wear this as she would have certainly stood out.

There is something about a woman in a tuxedo and I love that instead of going for a safer option by wearing this in black she went for it in red, it totally paid off as she looks hot!!! I know a lot has been spoken about the fact that she was on the red carpet for the first time in years with Angelina Jolie but I think this look is so different from her silver gown that it stops comparisons and that was very clever.

For some this had a little bit too much plunge, I have to disagree I think the neckline and opting for no blouse really works and I love that she accessorised her décolletage with a couple of gold necklaces. Another love from this look has to be those flared-leg trousers, they are so flattering and really give her super long legs.

My final look that I adored at the Critics’ Choice Awards had to be Emily Blunt, like with Jennifer her Golden Globes look didn’t excite me, and it is because I knew that she could do so much better like with this red embroidered lace Emilio Pucci halter-neck gown. How stunning is this, if it was in white it would make a great wedding gown with those sheer chiffon inserts.

I do love the colour choice, it adds a touch of sex appeal to the elegance glamour of the embroidered gown and I love her wavy hair, it all just looks so effortless. Also Emily and her husband John Krasinski really are leading the Hollywood pack for the cutest couple award.

Wedding: Angelina Jolie Marries In Atelier Versace

Versace-Angelina-Jolie-Wedd

I love a celebrity wedding, seeing what they wore, where they held the reception, but I love it even more when they go ahead and surprise us and get married without anyone knowing like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt did last month.

Since the news that they wed at Château Miraval, the couple’s home in France, I think everyone has been dying to see what Angie wore down the aisle. I think most like me were expecting a lacy Elie Saab creation, but when I heard that the actress had turned to Donatella Versace I have to admit I wasn’t surprised as she does favour the Italian label on the red carpet.

As you would expect Angie was a vision in her gown that was a little more traditional than I expected, it did have a twist though, as the custom-made white silk-satin Atelier Versace gown and veil was detailed with embroidered drawings from her six children, to really make it a family affair.

People and Hello have the exclusive to the wedding, which was attended by just 20 friends and family members, and each child played a key role in the wedding from Zahara and Vivienne being flower girls to Maddox and Pax walking their mum down the aisle, and Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers. It sounds so cute.

Interview: Maleficent Costume Designer Anna B. Sheppard

Maleficent-anna-b-sheppard

When you see Maleficent you will leave the cinema thinking about Angelina Jolie’s amazing cheekbones, the sweetness of Elle Fanning as Aurora, and the incredible costumes designed by  Anna B. Sheppard, who is known for her work on ‘Schindler’s List’ and ‘The Pianist,’ both of which earned her Oscar nominations.

I got the chance to chat with Anna about the costumes, working with Angelina, and the difficulties of designing for an action movie like Maleficent.

Maleficent is one of the most iconic villains in cinematic history – what was it like to take on this project?

Daunting!!! We started the prep for this film 10 weeks before the first day of shoot and I met Angelina like 8 weeks before and we started from scratch. Everyone expected one costume, because everyone remembers the animated character, and we created eight. It was blood, sweat and tears, and I had a lot of help from Team Maleficent – I had my assistant costume designer Jane Clive, and lots of young designers who experimented with our costumes – like with the millinery, the shoes, with our leather elements – they helped me a lot.

The original really stays in your memory, everyone as a child has seen Sleeping Beauty and everyone remembers Maleficent, so that was the challenge of this movie to bring this animated version to life and to keep the magic in the costumes.

What was it like working with Angelina Jolie on the Maleficent costumes?

A bad person never looked so beautiful – she looks absolutely amazing. Angelina really did give herself to this character and think people don’t realise that she is more than just being beautiful, she is also incredibly intelligent. She was 150 percent involved in the creation of the designs.

Were there any challenges involved in Maleficent’s signature costume?

It is practically creating the identical silhouette from the animated movie but the technical details were more difficult because I wanted a more sculptured silhouette, but still very slim. It is like a dress with bat-wings attached with a long train, which needed to be weighted down to make the costume behave like it should. It was made from metres of pleated black fabric and it took weeks to make – day and night. But the results were worth it.

As well as Maleficent there are a host of fabulous costumes for Aurora and Diaval – how did you perfect their look?

With Elle and Aurora, they were very innocent costumes, Aurora is the girl who lives in the forest surrounded by funny fairies, and I thought about her lines with her long hair and it made me think of Ophelia. That was my inspiration to create something like light almost; it needed to be such a contrast to Maleficent’s costume.

For Diaval I wanted him to look like a rock star. Because Raven is black so his clothes should be black, in the first concept he was suppose to be covered in feathers, but of course that didn’t work, so we didn’t have much time to dress he so we went for a cross between a pirate and a rock star – with high boots, leather trousers, frock coat, and an open black shirt.

Is there a particular sequence that you feel the costumes really shine through?

I think the christening scene is quite impressive, I love that and a lot of work went into it, because we had to create the whole ‘court’ of King Stefan and the different types of costumes is great to see.

Were there any challenges making the costumes work for the action scenes?

The last costume, the all-in-one leather costume for the fight, we had to make 25 for that sequence as they were exposed to fires, so they also needed to be fireproof. Sometimes you have to sacrifice beauty of the costume for the practicality of an action movie.

Maleficent World Premiere: Angelina Jolie In Atelier Versace

Maleficent-LA-1

Disney’s ultimate villain, that we all secretly love, Maleficent has finally hit cinemas and it seems that lead actress Angelina Jolie can’t get enough of her character’s gothic glamour. For the world premiere of the film in Hollywood, Angelina turned to one of her favourite designer labels, Atelier Versace for a gorgeous, custom-made gown that just screamed, Maleficent.

Angelina went for a dramatic, statement strapless black column gown composed of rubberised silk, which gathered at the waist into a sweeping train, the look definitely looked made for an evil fairy. I just love how captivating the dress looked, much like her characters cheekbones, I couldn’t take my eye off this intriguing dress that was perfect for the world premiere.

If the gown wasn’t beautiful enough the styling took this look to a whole new level, pairing the rubberised dress with dangerous-looking jewellery including a single spiked earring and a spiked cuffs. This went perfectly with her simple, pulled-back ponytail and smoky eyes.

I love this look you can totally see Maleficent wearing this Atelier Versace gown. What do you think of Angelina Jolie’s premiere dress?Maleficent-LA-2 Maleficent-LA-5 Maleficent-LA-3

Maleficent: Angelina Jolie In Atelier Versace

Maleficent-angelina-jolie-1Who: Angelina Jolie

Where: At Disney’s “Maleficent” red carpet event at Kensington Palace in London to showcase the costumes from the film

Wearing: A black custom-made Atelier Versace gown with plunging v-neckline to the front and back, sheer long sleeves and embellished with Swarovski crystals, teamed with black heels and minimal accessories

Verdict: If I had just seen this look on a photograph I might have just quickly dismissed it with, yeah it is flawless as always but feels like she has done it before, but because I was at the red carpet event and saw her wearing this exquisite embellished gown I was in awe at how beautiful she looked. Everything from her sleek up-do, dramatic eyes, and her coordinated man, Brad Pitt, wearing a black Gucci suit on her arm was just to show off this incredible gown that really did shimmer.

Granted I do feel like I have seen this dress before, it is like a black version of this Elie Saab and it is quite similar to this Atelier Versace gown she wore last year, but I still think it is gorgeous. The front of the dress was nice, but for me it was all about the deep-V to the back, the draping is just divine and I loved that the entire gown was dripping in Swarovski crystals.

Everyone who saw her last night was saying that there aren’t that many real superstars left in acting anymore and I quite agree – the actress spent about an hour on the red carpet and I was captivated by her demure, gracious and charming personality as she did interviews and signed fans autographs. Not going to lie but I was totally under Angie’s spell!!!

Are you a fan of Angelina Jolie’s latest red carpet look?

Cover Loving: Angelina Jolie For ELLE US

Elle-US-Angelina-Jolie

Oooh I do love a black and white magazine cover, especially when it is as gorgeous as this, Angelina Jolie looks stunning on the June cover of US ELLE. Captured by Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane, the whole shoot is striped back and just beautiful, on the cover Angelina looks relaxed in her signature colour, black, wearing minimal make-up that shows off her incredible cheekbones and her hair down. This is sublime and one of my favourite covers in a long time.

The cover is accompanied by a 16-page spread, that is huge, which will also be featured in more than 20 editions of ELLE worldwide and I am hoping it appears in my subscription copy of the UK version. Wearing exclusively Saint Laurent, well that’s obvious isn’t it, it is more than just a look book for the French fashion house because it is Angelina, if this was a model I would have thought it was a little over kill, but I like that she is basically showcasing the label’s monochrome pieces.

I also can’t wait to read the whole interview, the Maleficent star talks about her relationship with Brad, why she never thought she would have children, and casting her own daughter in her up-coming flick, basically it looks like ELLE covered it all.

What are your thoughts on Angelina Jolie’s latest magazine cover?

Oscars 2014: Best Dressed – Angelina Jolie In Elie Saab

Oscars-Angelina-jolie-elie-saab

Who: Angelina Jolie

Where: At the 86th Academy Awards held in Los Angeles, California

Wearing: A greige, fully embellished long-sleeved tulle Elie Saab Couture gown featuring a sheer bodice from the autumn/winter 2013 collection, teamed with of pale satin champagne Salvatore Ferragamo peep-toe shoes

Verdict: The red carpet really did pick up when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt arrived, granted they are a gorgeous couple, but I think it was all because of this stunning sexy-yet-elegant Elie Saab Couture gown.

I have to be honest I really thought she would wear black, it would probably be Saint Laurent or Versace, and she would show off a bit of leg – but this Elie Saab was so much better and such a lovely surprise.

For some this look was ageing, maybe it was the ombre metallic hue, but for me it was pure Hollywood glamour – I love everything about this exquisite gown. The only thing I would have changed is her hair – I think having it up would have just finished off this look perfectly.

What are your thoughts about Angie’s embellished gown?
