84th Oscars: Trends – Whites, Nude Tones and Red Hues

Whereas the Golden Globes were a little bit bridal with its white and nude trends, last night’s 84th Academy Awards went with the white theme again but this time the designs were more bold in design from my best dressed, Gwyneth Paltrow in a gorgeous sleek all-white Tom Ford gown with a matching floor-length cape, to intricate textured and iridescent gowns including Milla Jovovich’s Elie Saab one-shoulder, and Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture.

As well as whites, there were a lot of shimmering nude tones as well, from Cameron Diaz’s demure Gucci gown with its metallic beaded chiffon train, to Jennifer Lopez’s crystal beaded Zuhair Murad dress, and even Kristen Wiig went all romantic in her gorgeous J Mendel gown with a pleated layered skirt

I didn’t think there was much colour on the red carpet, granted Meryl Streep and George Clooney’s girlfriend went with gold, but it was the red hues that really stood out for me. My favourite of the bunch has to be Michelle Williams’ ‘burnt orange’ Louis Vuitton, the retro feel of this 50’s inspired gown was just perfectly matched with her flawless hair and make-up and I just loved the peplum detailing.

Joining Michelle matching the red carpet were Natalie Portman looking fabulous in vintage Christian Dior, which kind of made up for all the controversy of not wearing Dior last year; and even with Emma Stone’s deja vu moment of Nicole Kidman’s classic Oscar look from 2007, I still loved her scarlet couture gown by Giambattista Valli.

This was one of the most demure red carpets at the Oscars I have seen in a long while, there were no outright awful outfits – that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some I didn’t like, but there weren’t as many standout gowns as I would have liked.

I kind of don’t think other than Gwynnies cape crusader look there were any others that I would remember in a couple of years, unlike when Michelle Williams wore Vera Wang in 2006, or when Julia Roberts went with Valentino in 2001, or how about that gorgeous Elie Saab number that Halle Berry shined in for her Oscar-winning moment in 2002, and one of my favourite looks has to be Cameron Diaz’s bejewelled princess Oscar de la Renta look in 2010, a designer that I totally missed last night on the red carpet.

What did you think of last night’s Oscar red carpet? Let me know who your favourite was.

84th Oscars: Best Actress Meryl Streep In Lanvin

Who: Best Actress winner Meryl Streep

Where: At the 84th Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles

Wearing: A custom metallic lamé draped wrap Lanvin gown made from eco-certified fabric

Verdict: Meryl must have predicted a win by going for a gold number, which I always think looks even better holding a gold Oscar statute. Even though this look isn’t my favourite of the night I do like the fact that she went for glamorous with a touch of maturity with the wrap style. However, I don’t think it has the best fit on her, the chain belt helps nip it in at her waist but not enough. What I do adore is her make-up, hair and choice of earrings – they are gorgeous.

84th Oscars: Rose Byrne In Vivienne Westwood

Who: Bridesmaids’ star Rose Byrne

Where: At the 84th Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles

Wearing: A one-shoulder midnight-blue sequinned Vivienne Westwood slinky gown, teamed with her blunt bob, Chanel drop earrings and Jimmy Choo ‘New Linda’ heels

Verdict: I have to admit I was a little surprised that this was Vivienne Westwood, and I don’t think I would have believed it except Rose told Ryan Seacrest on E! News. After being wowed at the SAG Awards when Rose wore a jumpsuit and getting up close and personal to her at the Pringle of Scotland LFW show and seeing how gorgeous she is in real life, I think I have a little crush on her. I love the glamour of this gown, with its all-over sequins and draping detailing to the front, and it fits her perfectly. I think on anyone else this could have been a boring look but on her it looks modern and fresh. I like it.

84th Oscars: Kristen Wiig Feminine In J Mendel

Who: Bridesmaids star Kristen Wiig

Where: At the 84th Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles

Wearing: A strapless nude tulle J Mendel gown with woven bodice and hand-pleated layered skirt from the pre-fall 2012 collection

Verdict: I don’t think I have seen Kristen Wiig look as feminine, I love this nude-hue on her, and I think the tired tulle skirt has a drama about it that makes it gorgeous for the Oscars. I can however imagine that not everyone is going to warm to this look, especially with her beach-relaxed hair style.
