Movie Marathon: Top 5 Fashion Films

This week I was treated to a screening of one of my favourite films Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring the uber-stylish Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golighty by the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair and it got me thinking about what other stylish films I love to watch. There are a lot in my collection so narrowing down to five was hard, but here they are – do you agree?

1. The September Issue

With New York Fashion Week taking place at the moment and the fashion train coming to London on Friday, one of my favourite films that gives a great insight into the world of fashion has to be The September Issue. If you haven’t seen it and want to know what it takes to make a magazine, a look into how Anna Wintour works, and see Grace Coddington in action then this is the fashion film for you. Each time I watch I see/learn something different.

2. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I think Holly Golighty has to be the original party girl and Audrey Hepburn plays her with such style and elegance and I love her oversized sunnies, the hats, and the tailored dresses. Plus George Peppard isn’t bad to look at!!! I love the idea of doing a day of firsts, playing Moon River on repeat, and I totally agree looking into Tiffany’s windows calms me right down as well. An iconic movie that never gets old, each time I see I love it a little more.

3. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days

I couldn’t have my top five fashion films without including this Kate Hudson romantic comedy with the hunky Matthew McConaughey. Just for her incredible yellow gown at the end, paired with the gorgeous Isadora diamond it is a stylish must-see flick. But it is more than that, I also love her backless grey dress that she wears to the bar and her laid-back causal jeans and vest on the motorbike, basically this film just makes me love Kate Hudson even more. Can you imagine Gwyneth Paltrow as Andie? Apparently she was down to play the lead – I just don’t think the film would have been the same.

4. Sex and the City

Fashion and SATC goes hand-in-hand and I couldn’t do a fashionable movie marathon without including New York’s most stylish ladies – Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. I loved the series, I had/have an obsession on Sarah Jessica Parker and her character Carrie, everything from her signature necklace, her love of shoes and her boy troubles and this big screen version cheers me right up. Plus you have to watch just to see Carrie in that gorgeous Vivienne Westwood wedding gown!!!

5. The Devil Wears Prada

Not only do I love this film because it is supposedly based on Lauren Weisberger’s real life while she was at Vogue, but it was Anne Hathaway’s breakaway film from the Princess Diaries, oh and I do love a transformation film. Plus this film is packed full of fashionable looks, from Andy’s Chanel blazer, that distressed studded bag, the hats, oh and that black John Galliano dress. Oh and I do love any film that includes shots of Paris.

There were a lot of films I had to leave out like Clueless, Some Like It Hot, Almost Famous – a classic Kate Hudson film, Coco Before Chanel, and another Audrey Hepburn classic, Funny Face.

What are you favourite go-to fashion flicks?

Movie Marathon: 5 Films To Make You Smile

On days like today, when it is windy and rainy outside I like to go into hibernation mode and settle in front of the TV. A movie marathon is one of my favourite things to do on a quiet weekend, whether it is a series of fashionable films, gushing over my movie idols, swooning over the likes of Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis, or my go-to five movies that totally cheer me up. Today with the weather being so miserable I need films that make me smile.

1. Overboard

Billed as a ‘screwball comedy’ and I couldn’t agree more but it is because of the craziness of this film and the chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell that makes it one of my favourites. If you haven’t seen it, shame on you, download it now – basically Goldie is a pampered socialite who loses her memory, Kurt’s character decides she will make a great mum to his kids – hilarity follows!!!

2. Sweet Home Alabama

This film for me is a combination of loving Reese Witherspoon, finding Josh Lucas hot, and the Southern location. Every time I watch this movie I love her hair cut short that it makes me consider chopping off my locks, well for a second, the gorgeous setting makes me want to book a holiday to Alabama, and I always say to my boyfriend we need some cool vases like that for our house, which always gets the same eye-roll!

3. High Society

Well there had to be one musical in the mix, it was hard to choose between Singing In The Rain and this, but I just love the chemistry between Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby. As well as making me smile, I love the very drunk/hungover Tracy played by Grace, I just adore her wardrobe, but most of all I love singing along with Sinatra and Celeste Holm when they ask ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire’ – all together now “I don’t”.

4. Birdcage

This is Robin Williams at his very best, he literally makes me laugh non-stop, but the moment I love the most in this film is when the butler puts shoes on – seriously hilarious that I have been known to rewind it and play it again. This film, like with Blue Brothers, which would have made it in the top 5 if I could have found the DVD, reminds me of afternoons with my mum as we both love these movies. If you watch this film and don’t laugh I just don’t think we can be friends!!!

5. Coyote Ugly

Just writing the title is making me sing ‘Can’t Fight The Moonlight’ – this movie has everything I love a hint of comedy, romance, and someone to swoon over Adam Garcia. Plus I can’t be the only one who wanted to be a Coyote Ugly so they could dance on the bar. Also every time I watch I forget that Tyra Banks is in it and I wonder why Piper Perabo didn’t make it huge as I love her in this flick.

After more suggestions? Well, I also love Blues Brothers, Some Like It Hot, Sister Act, Knight and Day – who knew Tom Cruise was so funny, and basically anything with Goldie Hawn, I love The Out-of-Towners, HouseSitter and Bird on a Wire with a young Mel Gibson.

I am always on the look out for more films to add to the marathon – so why not leave me a comment below with your favourite films that make you smile?
