Film Review: Joss Whedon’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

Much ado about nothing Film Review: Joss Whedons Much Ado About Nothing %tag

At the weekend I went to see the much-anticipated Joss Whedon take on William Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, which was shot over the course of only 12 days in the director’s Santa Monica home, and if you are a fan of Whedon’s past TV shows and films you will spot a few familiar faces in the incredible cast.

I saw a number of interviews with the guy who brought me Buffy, Angel, Firefly and of course last year’s Avenger’s Assemble, and nearly everyone seemed surprised that he would do something different, unexpected, and that it would be incredible. I wasn’t surprised by how good it was, but I wasn’t expecting the film which is filmed in black and white and uses the original text that it is written largely in prose, to be so modern, fresh and charming.

The comedy is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, I love how it portrays romance, politics, family and most of all the love-hate relationship between Benedick and Beatrice, played by Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker, who really were the standout stars of this production, especially with their screwball comedy performances. Amy Acker, best known as Fred in Angel, really did shine in this film and for me had a touch of Katharine Hepburn about her.

As well as great performances from Denisof and Acker, another highlight had to be Nathan Fillion aka the evil creepy priest Caleb from Buffy and of course Kate Beckett’s sidekick in Castle, as Dogberry and Tom Lenk, also from Buffy, as his sidekick Verges – both were hilarious as the bumbling clownish night watchmen.

Unlike other adaptations of classics that have been given the glossy treatment, with over done staging, costumes, and music, Whedon kept his version contemporary and in keeping with Shakespeare’s story, and even though on paper it maybe shouldn’t work it so does and I am sure it will be used by many an English teacher to make Shakespeare look cool!!!

I love that Whedon kept the original words, that he didn’t make the cast put on fake English accents, and that he had them wearing modern dress, and I thought the constantly drinking throughout really helped understand why the characters make the choices they do.

I went to see this with a friend and we both agreed that the only thing missing was Sarah Michelle Gellar aka Buffy and Summer Glau from Firefly, but really that is just us both being uber geeky Whedon fans and dreamers!!!

I am going to have to say this has to be the must-see film of the summer and I can’t recommend it enough, I just hope that more cinemas put on screenings as so far it looks like it is going to have a limited run. Check out the film’s website to see if it is on at a cinema near you, trust me you will love it.

Video Loving: Christian Louboutin’s Red Soles Travel From Paris To Saks

I do love a good fashion film and this one from Christian Louboutin is adorable. Celebrating the luxury footwear label’s first US in-store salon at Saks in New York, the short film starring the designer himself, follows his iconic red-soled footwear from his Paris studio, past the Eiffel Tower to the Flat-iron Building in New York before heading over to Saks. As well as the glimpses of my two favourite cities, I love Louboutin’s charm, and the seductive red footprint trial.

If you have a couple of minutes to spare, this short film is an adorable watch!

Reinvent Yourself: Diane Kruger For Jaeger-LeCoultre

Diane Kruger Jaeger LeCoultre Reinvent Yourself: Diane Kruger For Jaeger LeCoultre %tag Who: Diane Kruger

Where: At the launch of her short film, Reinvent Yourself with Jaeger-LeCoultre in New York

Wearing: A black fitted Alessandra Rich crepe gown with dramatic fringe detailing to the side, teamed with a skinny white belt, white Christian Louboutin heels, a checked clutch, chunky bracelets and of course a dainty Jaeger-LeCoultre watch

Verdict: Only Diane could get away with wearing this fringed beauty during the day and what a beauty it is, I love how she has styled it with white accessories making it so on trend, as monochrome styles are everywhere.

What I love most about this look has to be how immaculate she looks – her body looks incredible in the fitted dress, her belt shows off her tiny waist, and her natural, barely there make-up and sleek hair is just the topping on the cake really. I know that I gush a lot about Diane, but come on this is why, she is stunning.

So why was Diane sporting a gorgeous fringed dress during the day in New York? I would like to answer that why not, but actually the actress was launching the new short film she stars in for Jaeger-LeCoultre called ‘Reinvent Yourself’.

The beautiful film, directed by Fabienne Berthaud and set to the Shirley Bassey ‘(Where Do I Begin) Love Story’ song, basically pays tribute to the her unique personality and successful career – following her from a young ballerina to a successful fashion model and now an actress.

Watch the film below – it really captures Diane’s beauty perfectly, and she even cries pretty!!!

Video Loving: River Island’s Dog Cam

I love it when brands do something new for their campaigns, whether it is a Twitter takeover or even an interactive styling app, but the most creative campaign I have seen in a while has to go to River Island for this cool Dog Cam as a behind-the-scenes to its spring/summer 2013 advert.

Seriously cute – I think all videos such come with a dog cam!!!

Video Loving: J.Crew Shares Its ‘Shiny Ponies’

Shoe addicts you have to watch this adorable short film from J.Crew with their gorgeous creative director Jenna Lyons discussing her love of shoes, she has 289 pairs and counting, and how the brand makes their fabulous footwear collections.

I am not as shoe obsessed as some, granted I have a lot of pairs, but sky-high heels aren’t always my thing but I do love to look at them, admire them on other people, and there are some beauties in this film, especially the ones that Jenna describes as “business at the front, party at the back” – they are simply divine.

I am in love with the ‘Etta’ seen in this video, the term ‘shiny pony’ and Jenna – oh and generally everything about J.Crew – I can’t wait for the store to open on Regent Street, London later this year.

“Shoes are like fairies… with that little magical piece that finishes everything” – Jenna Lyons.
