Do you find that you have different uniforms you wear without realising for the different seasons? Like for winter, my go-to looks are all about chunky knits, skinny jeans and ankle boots, and when it comes to my summer uniform I generally go straight to my denim skirts and stripy tops. No matter the trends, some pieces in my wardrobe, I like to call them staples always comes out, no matter what, and the denim skirt is one of my ultimate summer staples that I wear on repeat.
Denim generally features quite heavily in my wardrobe, whether that’s ripped skinny jeans, Mom jeans, loose-fitted boyfriend jeans, a great denim jacket, preferably covered in badges, cute, but not too tiny denim shorts, or a throw-on-and-go denim dresses or dungarees, I think at least a third, if not more of my wardrobe is denim, and the trusty denim skirt is certainly my go-to piece in creating my ultimate summer uniform.
So what make’s up my Summer uniform?
First thing, has to be the denim skirt.
I have a whole host of them in my wardrobe, and no matter how many I have, I always, and I mean always need more. It’s like skinny jeans, one pair isn’t enough is it. If my husband was commenting on my denim skirts he would generally say they are all the same, however, there are subtle differences to a theme, which is generally that they are all knee-length they might just be different shades, some are distressed, others have pockets, and some have patches on them. This beauty is my classic Gap go-to that I picked up in the sale over the winter for less than £10. It is a great fit, amazing denim and the perfect length.
Denim skirt, checked. Next up, the stripy top.
Another wardrobe staple that I probably have too many of but who doesn’t love a stripy top and this ‘Hello Sailor’ cutie from Sugarhill Boutique is so adorable, and I love that it adds a playful touch to any look. Sugarhill Boutique is a relatively new find for me but if like me you love a slogan, a whimsical print and a cute stripe or two you will love them. I already have my eye on a number of other pieces to add to my summer wardrobe.
Done skirt and top – now I need shoes.
I’m a huge fan of flats all year round but in the summer they really do come into their own, don’t they? Whether you opt for cute trainers like these Keds, which FYI if you don’t already own a pair snap some up as they are so comfortable more so than Converse I think, or a delicate pair of sandals or even a flat ankle boot I love that nearly all kinds of shoes work with a denim skirt.
Final touches – the details.
This is probably my favourite part of any look, but especially my summer uniform, the details are what keeps this outfit not looking like it is on repeat, even though it actually is. I always opt for a brightly coloured bag, this yellow statement from Rebecca Minkoff is perfect, made even more so now I’ve changed the strap out for one of Cath Kidston’s ‘Love Your Handles’ straps, which literally transforms any bag in an instant. It means that all those bags I have in my closet can have a new lease of life, and this one is super cute as it has ‘have a jolly day’ down it.
Normally I would probably have left it at the Keds and bag, but because of this ‘sailor’ top, I couldn’t resist adding this rope belt, which actually came with an Asos dress that I loved from last summer. I love how it just ties up the whole outfit together. My husband didn’t get it though, he asked me why I was wearing a curtain tie around my waist – seriously!!!
