The final award show of the season, the Oscars 2017 didn’t disappoint with its red carpet looks. So, there may not have been the drama that happened on-screen, oh my what a shambles at the end, but there were still some beautiful moments, so much so, I couldn’t quite get my best dressed list down to just 5, so here are my top 7 looks. We have showstopper from Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture, a touch of velvet, shimmering perfection from Emma Stone in Givenchy Couture, and lots of black, here are my favourite looks from the 89th annual Academy Awards red carpet.
1
Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture
You guys know I love a bit of drama on the red carpet and this beautiful Elie Saab Couture gown worn by Moonlight and Hidden Figures actress Janelle Monae was the showstopper of the Oscars 2017 red carpet by a mile. I totally adore the black tulle sleeveless gown with its sheer bodice embroidered with birds, yes it does make you think back to Halle Berry’s amazing Oscar dress when she won, but the craftsmanship of this gown with its exaggerated skirt silhouette make it so unique.
The sheer bodice contrasted beautifully with the heavily embellished lines of lace, feathers, sequins, beads and crystal stones in a monochrome colour palette, without it this look might have seemed too heavy for her tiny frame, but instead she commands it with confidence and that’s what made it so perfect for the Oscars 2017.
Her jewellery was also a knockout, from the Elie Saab Couture jewelled choker necklace to her Forevermark Diamonds – those yellow diamond earrings are stunning.
2
Emma Stone in Givenchy Couture
I think I’ve been building up Emma Stone’s award season a little too much, I haven’t really warmed to any of her looks so far, and I have to admit this Givenchy Couture look by Riccardo Tisci took a while to grow on me. To be honest, what held me back from loving was that she was wearing Oscars gold, it is a little cliché, especially for someone who is favourite to win, but then I kind of came to admire and even love the intricate gold beaded, embroidered and ombré fringing to the dress, which looked perfect with her gorgeous skin tone.
This dress also marks the final couture gown from Riccardo Tisci so it does make it a little special and even I can’t deny it does totally work alongside that Best Actress gong. Also, her jewellery is divine, I’m obsessed with her Tiffany & Co. diamond drop earrings from the 2017 Tiffany Blue Book collection.
3
Naomie Harris in Calvin Klein By Appointment
When it came to dresses that divided opinion on my Twitter it had to be this white sequinned Calvin Klein by Appointment dress. Some people had a problem with the cocktail length, I love that, it totally made the Nominated Best Supporting Actress Naomie Harris standout, then it was the simple design, I also love that, this is instantly recognisable as Calvin Klein for me, and then they didn’t like the pop of yellow, OMG I couldn’t disagree more the styling of these shoes, which mix-match crystal straps are gorgeous.
If this dress didn’t have the train, which FYI was incredible, then I can see why people were moaning about the length, but surely the train adds that glamour and flair that the Oscars deserves, plus no one can deny that this custom-made dress was made to perfection the fit is impeccable. Add that all in with the styling, those heels, the Bulgari diamond earrings, and her gorgeous red eyeshadow make-up, and come on how can you deny this from the Oscars 2017 best dressed list?
4
Taraji P. Henson in Alberta Ferretti
When it comes to old Hollywood glam, Taraji P. Henson had it down in this stunning midnight blue velvet custom Alberta Ferretti off-the-shoulder gown. This dress really showed off her incredible body, I loved the sexy neckline and thigh-high split, as it stopped this look from being too simple. Then add in her styling, that Nirav Modi necklace was one of the best jewellery pieces of the night, and her bed-head, wavy bob and smoky eye make-up was just sheer perfection. Stunning and glamorous.
5
Hailee Steinfeld in Ralph & Russo Couture
At only 20 years old, the Oscars red carpet could seem a little daunting, not for Hailee Steinfeld, she totally wowed in this exquisite Ralph & Russo gown, which shimmered down the red carpet. The halter neckline can be a little hard to pull off but her statuesque posture makes it easy, and I love how the dress combines 3D floral applique and crystal embellishment to make the sheer grey silk organza standout. If it wasn’t beautiful enough from the front, as soon as she turned around I gasped at the beauty of those delicate ruffles. This is a dreamy look from the young starlet.
6
Kirsten Dunst in Dior Couture
There always has to be a least one princess moment on the Oscars red carpet and that belong to Kirsten Dunst in this black silk faille Dior Couture gown. OK, I grant you I would have loved to seen this gorgeous dress in a pop of colour, but the black does look incredible on her, and that high-low 40’s style silhouette is perfect on her. Also, who wouldn’t love a gorgeous gown with pockets? Add to this look that stunning Niwaka diamond necklace and earrings, smoky eyes, vibrant lips and perfectly tousled hair and you have one incredible look.
7
Brie Larson in Oscar de la Renta
I can’t resist Old Hollywood glam and this velvet strapless V-neck Oscar de la Renta gown by the label’s new creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia is so pretty on last year’s Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson. Everything from the velvet to the Flamenco ruffled train to the neckline, everything just works, and then you add in the styling, her combed-over loose curls, that bold lipstick and Neil Lane earrings and this is one beautiful styled look. I do love a touch of va-va-voom on the red carpet.
