Are you getting bored of fashion exhibitions yet? Nope, me neither, I’m obsessed with seeing beautifully constructed couture looks side-by-side, it’s always interesting seeing Chanel next to Dior for instance, and I adored the incredible designs on show at the Fashion Forward: 3 Centuries of Fashion, the exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. I would love to say that this post is just a teaser that you still had time to see, sadly I only just managed to see it as it closes on August 14, but to ease the pain of missing I hope you like these amazing pics, I’m kind of obsessed with my new camera, the Canon EOS M10, perfect for travelling.
So what made the Fashion Forward exhibition so special, well the setting certainly helped, seeing gorgeous couture in Paris was magical, then add in the mix of designs, there is everyone from Chanel to Yves Saint Laurent, Vionnet, Dior, Schiaparelli, and Lanvin, as well as newbies including Vetements and Comme Des Garcons. It was slightly surreal to see Vetement sweats from their autumn/winter 2016 amongst the mix, some might disagree with their inclusion, while others feel looking to the future of fashion is a great idea.
The Fashion Forward exhibition has more than 300 clothing pieces spanning 300 years, starting with the fashions from the lustrous reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, where the exhibition states that French fashion started taking shape. While the historical pieces were great to see, the exhibition didn’t really impress me until I saw the modern era all displayed in the large exhibition hall of the museum. Combining the gorgeous couture pieces, the incredible light of the hall, and the intricate stair design of the exhibit was mesmerising, kind of made me think of that famous staircase in Gabrielle Chanel’s salon at 31 Rue Cambon. I just wanted to consume all the fashion details, the designers, the history and it was so inspiring, and I hope that comes across in these images.
Unlike other recent fashion exhibitions technology wasn’t on show, this was just fashion on show, which totally made it perfection in my eyes, I think other exhibitions can learn something that not everything needs to be interactive, yet what’s on display speak for itself, and this collection of French fashion certainly did.
If you are in Paris from now until August 14 do go and see it, the fashion is simply divine.
