Hollywood’s starriest night took place last night, the Oscars 2016, and it was a fabulous red carpet to end an amazing award season – where we’ve seen stunning fashion grace the SAG Awards, BAFTAs, Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. The Oscars, however, is always an extra special night, I’ve been staying up all night to watch the red carpet and the award show since I was little, and last night was no exception and I was so pleased that some of my favourite stars really brought their A-game. We had a smouldering sexiness from Saoirse Ronan, a fairytale gown from Cate Blanchett, a mermaid vibe from Naomi Watts, and the best revenge frock worn by Jennifer Garner – it really was a great red carpet that I’ve upped my best-dressed list to 7 rather than 5 as I just couldn’t choose.
Oscars 2016 Best Dressed
Oscars 2016: Saorise Ronan in custom Calvin Klein
I have loved every look that Saorise Ronan has worn this award season, but she really did leave the best til last with this gorgeous custom Calvin Klein Collection gown designed by women’s creative director Francisco Costa. The emerald green colour was chosen to “honour” her home country of Ireland and I adored the dark green hue on her. What surprised me the most was how sexy this shimmering gown was, Saorise really has grown up a lot with her red carpet style over the past few months.
As well as the gown, Saoirse had one of the best hair and make-ups of the night, it had a natural glam about it, and it worked perfectly with her mismatched Chopard drop earrings featuring emeralds, pearls, jadeites and diamonds, totalling 27.27 carats. Statement earrings really were one of the key trends of the night – but I will leave that for another post.
Oscars 2016: Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive
Cate Blanchett always impresses but I have to admit I needed to warm up to this seafoam green cap-sleeve mermaid gown. Instantly I loved the colour, a different, more girlie hue for her, I even loved the silhouette, even if it was quite similar to her Oscars 2014 gown, but I just couldn’t get passed all the embellished clusters all over the skirt. The bodice was beautiful but on first glance it just looked too much on the skirt, well that was until I saw it on the TV and the detail of the clusters of Swarovski crystals and white feathers was enchanting. The Carol nominated actress who seriously embodies true Hollywood glamour finished off her look with some beautiful Tiffany jewels.
Oscars 2016: Naomi Watts in Giorgio Armani Privé
Armani had a great night as another best dressed had to be Naomi Watts in this stunning sapphire blue and vibrant purple strapless gown. Come on if someone said to you do you want to dress like a mermaid to the Oscars 2016 you are going to jump at the chance. Naomi has this ability to always dress like a nominee, which is why more often than not she makes my best-dressed lists, and I was blown away by how captivating this sequined gown looked on screen and in pictures. Finishing off her look was a statement Bulgari white gold and diamond necklace and a pop of red on her lips. Simply stunning.
Oscars 2016: Jennifer Garner in Atelier Versace
If you are after elegant and classy Jennifer Garner always delivers and this Atelier Versace gown is stunning and the perfect first red carpet look after a brilliantly frank, interview in Vanity Fair about her divorce. I’m going to call this the best revenge look of the night – Jennifer was showing Ben Affleck what he was missing. Normally black gowns wouldn’t make my best-dressed list, but I like the asymmetric one-shoulder, the dramatic train and the embellishments to the bodice – it is sophisticated and perfect for Oscars night for a presenter.
Oscar 2016: Olivia Munn in Stella McCartney
Every award show needs a pop of colour and this Oscars 2016 was Olivia Munn wearing a gorgeous orange hue designed by Stella McCartney. After seeing so many gowns heavily embellished it was so lovely seeing this one-shoulder minimalist, wrap-style gown hit the red carpet. The gown was perfection, as was her Forevermark diamond cuff, and her hair and make-up, I love that she coordinated her lipstick.
Oscars 2016: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture
OK, so I was surprised that Jennifer Lawrence opted for Dior, I know, I’m also counting down the days for her contract to end with the French fashion house, but out of her Dior gowns she has worn of late this has to be my favourite. It’s sexy, modern and shows off her incredible figure – but what I adored the most had to be her hair, has she had it lightened a little? It looks good though doesn’t it. However, it was a shame that she didn’t walk the red carpet as I would have loved to have seen this gown in motion.
Oscars 2016: Charlize Theron in Dior
Maybe Charlize Theron’s show-stopping custom Dior kept Jennifer Lawrence off the red carpet, come on out of the two Dior-contracted beauties Charlize snagged the best dress!!! This sexy red number really stood out and Charlize owned the red carpet. If her gown wasn’t sexy enough, did you see that deep v-neck, the actress then wore $3.7 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds, including a Secret Cluster Diamond Necklace, totalling 48.8 carats – that’s some serious bling. This is how a movie star does the Oscars – seriously stunning.
