So we’ve had the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, and last night was the Screen Actors Guild Awards, better known as the SAG Awards 2016 and the red carpet was shall we say just OK, there were a few great looks, lots of nice looks, and a whole lot of boring. I’m not sure whether it was because some of my red carpet big hitters were missing Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Hudson, and Emily Blunt, who we’ve seen previously this award season. However, there was some good news British-based designers did really well, we had gowns designed by Julien Macdonald, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Peter Pilotto, Stella McCartney and Burberry – so good to see these incredible designers on the red carpet, and three of them even made in it to my top five best dressed.
SAG Awards 2016 – Best Dressed Top Five
Brie Larson in Atelier Versace SS16
First up we have SAG Awards 2016 winning actress Brie Larson, who scooped the Outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role for her performance in Room. Brie wore a straight-off-the-catwalk look from Atelier Versace’s recent spring 2016 couture show in Paris. This pale blue draped silk cady gown with a thigh-high split and Swarovski knot embellishments was a head-turner and gave her slender figure a curvaceous look. The actress also accessorised her look with more than $1 million Tiffany & Co. diamonds.
The actress said on the red carpet that she had just flown in from Australia and went directly to a gown fitting with stylist Cristina Ehrlich: “It was the first one [dress] I put on and I just knew — I couldn’t sleep on the plane, but you know when you’re perfectly in a daze and you can just make the right decision? That’s what happened.”
The only thing distracting me from this look is the hair, it seems a little too old-fashioned, and the heel isn’t working for me either – but this dress is stunning.
Kate Winslet in custom Giorgio Armani
There is some special about Kate Winslet in this custom Giorgio Armani silk cady teal gown. I have to admire someone who knows their signature style and sticks with it and this sleek, simple and structured gown with a deep v-neck and satin detailing on the décolleté and arms was perfect for her, and it was fitted beautifully. I also love that this was the first-time ever that the actress had worn Armani.
As well as loving her gown’s silhouette, the green hue seemed to be a trend of the night and was seen on other stars including Eva Longoria, Julianne Moore and Marisa Tomei. I also have to point out Kate’s incredible jewellery, those black and white diamond pear-shaped earrings by Neil Lane were made for a movie star. I just love the Old Hollywood glamour that Kate always brings to the red carpet.
Christina Ricci in Christopher Kane
I’m obsessed with this gorgeous pale pink gown by Christopher Kane that nominated actress Christina Ricci wore to the SAG Awards 2016. Not a designer you normal see gracing an award show red carpet so I was surprised and over-the-moon, as I adore this pastel pink gown with its lace bodice and full pleated skirt, which flared out a little into a train at the back. It was youthful, fun, and really stood out against all the blue, green and black gowns that graced the red carpet. I’m also loving her vintage Fred Leighton jewellery, really added to a gorgeous look.
Can we first up just digest that Mad Men actress Kiernan Shipka is only 16-years-old and she has already nailed the red carpet. I just can’t express how beautiful this floral Erdem dress is, the silhouette is divine, and I love that the what-could-be-a-granny floral print has been given a sexy, youthful vibe with the sweetheart neckline and black piping to the bodice.
What I also love about Kiernan on the red carpet is that she knows that she is a teenage and she always keeps her beauty looking beautiful and not too-over-done, and she totally gets that this dress has a lot going on so she kept her jewellery to a minimum, just wearing some Dana Rebecca Designs diamond stud earrings.
I do however think this look will divide opinions – are you loving it as much as me?
Naomi Watts in Burberry
Naomi Watts really does do elegant beauty really well and I adore her in this striking blue-and-black floral lace embroidered Burberry gown. I love the two colour combinations, as well as the sheer touch to the floral appliques on the sleeves. This gown is fitted to perfection and I love how her gorgeous figure is accentuated by a black satin band around her waist, it not only breaks up the floral lace but enhances her figure.
To finish off her look, the About Ray actress wore Bulgari sapphires, Jimmy Choo sandals, and carried a cherry red clutch, which perfectly matched her red lips. Also, how cute does her messy bob look?
