Golden Globes 2016 Red Carpet Trends

The Golden Globes are always exciting, it’s the first major award show of the season, and I always find that the fashion is more fun, which in turn means that the stars take a few more fashion risks, and this year’s red carpet trends were filled with fashion-forward looks. There were dangerous low plunging necklines as seen on Jaimie Alexander, romantic and pretty pale pink hues championed by Cate Blanchett in Givenchy, and even sexy featured cutouts as seen on Jennifer Lawrence’s custom Dior gown.

There were other red carpet trends that caught my eye including the resurgence of midnight blue, pulled off beautifully by Jenna Dewan-Tatum in her Zuhair Murad ballgown with silver celestial embroidery, and as always winter whites were showcased, my favourite being Lily James in a floaty Marchesa gown.

Golden Globes red carpet trends – Cutouts

Showing a bit of skin on the red carpet isn’t something new, the sheer, naked dress trend seemed to last forever, I’m hoping that 2016 can finally say bye to that, but this season the design to show off some skin was all about featured cutout detailing, with Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Hudson and Brie Larson leading the pack.

For Jennifer Lawrence, it was once again about Dior, and for the most part, I did like her statuesque red gown. It had a touch of Old Hollywood about it with the structured overlay of the bodice and helped along with that gorgeous Chopard diamond choker. However, even though the strategically placed cutouts showed off how incredible her body is, I just wish the fit of this custom gown was better. When the actress was standing still it looked great, as soon as she walked, however, the gaping was for all to see, which really cheapened the look for me.

The best of the cutouts trend had to be Kate Hudson in custom Michael Kors, who would have thought there was such a thing as a black-tie crop top. This look got a split reaction on the night from my Twitter, some loved the fact it was Kate having fun, and come on her body is amazing, but others thought it was such a fashion fail for the actress. I actually love the three-piece sequinned look, we can’t forget the choker. If she was nominated this would have been an instant miss for me, but she wasn’t, so why not have a little fun.

There’s always, at least, one star who comes as the Golden Globes statuette, this season it was Brie Larson in custom Calvin Klein. The star literally shimmered down the red carpet, while showing off her abs! It was is she knew she was going to win gold for her performance in Room.

Golden Globes red carpet trends – Midnight Blue

For once the dark hue of the night wasn’t black, actually there were very few black gowns as everyone it seemed had requested midnight blue, and I’m so pleased as it looked so fresh and modern, the best being Jenna Dewan-Tatum in this divine Zuhair Murad ballgown with silver celestial embroidery. This look actually falls into two trends as that plunging neckline gives all the others a run for their money as well, but I decided that it was the colour that made this look standout. I also think her arm candy, husband Channing Tatum also helps.

Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet actually went a little safe with this royal-blue Ralph Lauren with a criss-cross halter neckline. I like this gown, the colour and fit is beautiful, but don’t you think that Kate is better than this gown, especially as she won an award, this look suggests to me that she didn’t think she had a chance in winning. Hopefully, this will mean we get more from her as the award season goes on.

Then we have Julianne Moore who shimmered down the red carpet in this sultry Tom Ford sequinned gown accessories with oodles of beautiful Chopard diamond jewels. What I will say about this look, other than how hot Julianne Moore looks, is that, is it just me or is there something so powerful about this colour especially when in sequins. Love this look.

Golden Globes red carpet trends – Plunging Necklines

This year wasn’t about the thigh-high split, of course, Jennifer Lopez still got in on that action, but rather the sexy plunging neckline that probably means that Hollywood is out of tit-tape. I’ve already gushed about my favourites, Jaimie Alexander in this gorgeous Genny gown with its geometric print and Zendaya in Marchesa, if you missed it head back a post to my best-dressed list to see more. But the hottest had to be Kirsten Dunst, I know whatever happened to her, who stunned in this black Valentino creation. If this dress was another colour I would have been put off, but in black it’s sexy while also being classy, and I like all the delicate strap detailing to the front. Also, I think Kirsten has one of the best eye makeups of the night, now that’s how to work smokey eyes.

Other celebrities who took the plunge included Olivia Wilde in Michael Kors, Joanne Froggatt in Reem Acra, Katy Perry showed off her assets in Prada, while Maggie Gyllenhaal looked great in Marc Jacobs.

Golden Globes red carpet trends – All-White

Bridal looks always seem to come out during award season and for the most part, I try to stay clear but this year’s Golden Globes had a fresh, modern approach to all-white, especially Alicia Vikander’s apron-style Louis Vuitton gown. At first glance, it kind of looks like The Danish Girl star has slightly underdressed for the occasion, but I adored the prim vibe of the simple gown, which was accented beautifully with micro-embellishments for a little shimmer and a the criss-cross back adding a sexy, youthful feel. I just love how effortless Alicia makes red carpet dressing.

The other two white looks that stood out were British actress Lily James in a floaty Marchesa gown and Irish actress Saoirse Ronan who looked beautiful in a Grecian style Saint Laurent demi-caped gown. For me, it is hard to choose between them both, their looks are fairly similar, I think Lily’s chiffon gown is more bridal and will certainly inspire a lot of brides this year, whereas Saoirse seems more timeless, I really like the clean lines of her look, but then I’m drawn to the fairytale vibe of Lily’s. Can we just call this one a tie?

Golden Globes red carpet trends – Pale Pink & Gold

Neutral hues are always an award show winner, they are feminine and such a great colour tone to do intricate beading and embroidery on, and this year I loved how fashion-forward the looks were, especially the pink custom Givenchy gown worn by Cate Blanchett. This look actually nearly made my best-dressed list, Cate Blanchett can do no wrong for me on the red carpet, always pushing the boundaries of those celebrity dressing cliches to do her own thing. This 20s inspired beauty with its sweeping fringe, sheer panels and intricate embroidery was just so stunning to see. Also, her hair and makeup is so on point. Love it so much I wish I had done my top 6 looks for best-dressed!!!

I loved Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s fully-beaded champagne Atelier Versace gown so much that I had to include gold hues in with the pinks, I know I kind of cheated, but come on have you seen a gold gown look so good. It is sexy, it’s sophisticated, and its feminine with the delicate chiffon train. Top-to-toe this is a gorgeous look. If someone could promise I could look as good as her if I worked out every day I wouldn’t have any trouble getting to the gym!!!

Rooney Mara always brings something a little unique to the red carpet and this year it is  the regal Alexander McQueen gown that really did deserve its moment. I don’t think it showed off as well on TV as it does in pictures, when I was watching her on TV I couldn’t see the shredded lace effect. The actress also had one of the best hair-dos of the night, an elegant dressage-style braid. I can’t wait to see what she wears at the Oscars.

What did you think about this year’s Golden Globes red carpet trends? Who was your best-dressed?
