Primetime Emmy Awards: The Trends – Citrus Hues, A Sea Of Blue, and Shades Of Grey

I am a lover of the red carpet, I love seeing my favourite actresses, singers, and TV personalities looking all glamorous in designer couture gowns, and last night I was blown away by the standard of the Primetime Emmy Awards.

As well as spotting which designers they are wearing I also like to see the trends taking form, last award season there was a lot of open backs, and this Emmy Awards was all about a hint of colour, the various shades of blue and grey, with a little oxblood and floral mixed in for good measure.

I have already blogged some of my best dressed looks from January Jones’ statement Zac Posen gown to  Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier, to the shimmering beauty that was Lucy Liu in Versace, and the bombshell that is Sofia Vegara.

But with so many good looks I thought it best to do a trend post – so here are some more of my favourites.

Citrus Hues:

Normally there is a lot of black on award ceremony red carpet, that isn’t to say there wasn’t any last night – did you see January Jones, but what I was pleased about was all the citrus hues – ranging from vibrant oranges to canary yellow – maybe it was the California heat but the red carpet was sizzling.

Leading the orange pack was definitely Monique Lhuiller she dressed Ginnifer Goodwin in an orange floral embroidered beauty and Padma Lakshmi looked radiant in her strapless trumpet gown – the colour was perfection on her.

Then there was Leslie Mann in Naeem Khan, I love the contrast of the marigold coloured skirt with the embroidered ivory halter-neck bodice – seriously beautiful.

Finishing up the orange hues is Lindsay Pulsipher in Bibhu Mohapatra – everything about the colour to the Grecian styling of her hairstyle this is a gorgeous look.

Yellow was another key trend, which I was a little on the fence with as I am not sure about yellow on the red carpet, but I loved Julianne Moore’s canary yellow Christian Dior Couture gown – the full silk skirt looks stunning on her.

A pregnant and Emmy award-winning Claire Danes went for Lanvin, she said “it’s very bump friendly”, which is very true the draping was flattering and the colour really complemented her skin-tone.

But my favourite of the yellow gowns had to be ‘New Girl’ star Hannah Simone in a sunny yellow custom one-shoulder Emilio Pucci gown. I love the shade, I love the sexy thigh-high split, and the Lorraine Schwartz leaf earrings. One thing I can’t cope with though is her visible tan marks!!!

A Sea of Blue:

The blue tones ranged from aqua to midnight blue and each really stood out on the red carpet. Leading the pack were the darker shades, it is hard to choose my favourite but the two that really stood out were Sarah Paulson in Reem Acra, the embroidery was exquisite, and I adored the Louis Vuitton gown that British actress Michelle Dockery wore, it was simple but elegant.

I also added in Hayden Panettiere into the mix, I have to be honest I kind of like the dress the gold-embroidered Marchesa gown with blue tulle overlay works well, but I worry that it is a little too mature for her.

The aqua and pale blue hues were a little more playful and sexy. From the neck down I adored Julianne Hough’s Georges Hobeika Couture, I just don’t understand what she did with her hair. Heidi Klum showed off her sexy side in in Alexandre Vauthier – showing Angelina Jolie how to work a thigh-high slit.

But the gown that caught my attention had to be Zooey Deschanel’s princess gown designed by Reem Acra, it was whimsical, quirky and cute and she looked amazing, but why in all the pictures is she not smiling???

Shades Of Grey:

There is always something nice about grey and silver tones on the red carpet, always makes me think of Old-Hollywood glamour, and there were some elegant gowns last night.

Emily VanCamp from my new favourite show Revenge looked gorgeous in a delicate pleated J. Mendel gown, I adore the dove grey shade and the sheer bodice. But what makes this outfit has to be her bow tie Van Cleef bracelet – the best jewellery of the night!!!

With grey comes shimmery silvers and Lucy Lui in Versace and Kerry Washington in Vivienne Westwood Couture both dazzled at the Emmy’s, Kerry’s gown just looked effortless and sexy. I am going to call it tie between these two.

There were a number of Vivienne Westwood Couture gowns on the red carpet last night, with Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt leading the charge in this incredible corseted gown, which had a belt to nip in her tiny waist, and a split to add a touch of sexy – this dress had it all!

But my favourite shade of grey goes to Homeland’s actress Morena Baccarin who wore a sexy Basil Soda gown with a plunging neckline. I love the daring flash of cleavage, hey if you looked like Morena wouldn’t you flash them, and the David Webb drop earrings – this is a statement gown that totally floored me I love it!!!

So do you have a favourite from last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards?
