Golden Globes: Mermaid, The Three Bs and Two-Tone

As well as my excitement of seeing all my favourite celebrities walking the red carpet at major award ceremonies I also love to pick out the key trends. Last year we saw lots of emerald-green, long-sleeved dresses and minimalist looks, as well as a princess moment from Olivia Wilde. Before the awards I predicted that there would be a lot of blue hues, there were but not as much as I hoped for, there was however a wide mix of colours displayed from winter whites to pastel nudes, and bright yellow and reds, and of course the classic black never goes out of fashion.

This year’s top trends are below: the three Bs – that’s backs, blue and bridal, two-tone and the mermaid silhouette was out in force.

All About The Back

Over the year’s we’ve seen a lot of strapless silhouettes, elegant long-sleeves, plunging necklines and asymmetric gowns gracing the red carpet, and I am going to say that the 2012 Golden Globes was the year of the backless dress. From Nicole Richie shimmering in Julien Macdonald to Zooey Deschanel in that colourful Prada dress, there were lots of backs on show, including Claire Danes in J. Mendel, Evan Rachel Woods in Gucci, Julianna Margulies in Naeem Khan and Jessica Biel in Elie Saab.

Blue Hues

Last year the key colour was easily emerald-green, this year was harder to call it really was a split between deep hues of blue and dark green and winter whites and pastel shades. The blue hues really stood out for me with Michelle Williams in a burn-out velvet Jason Wu number, Kelly Osbourne stood tall in her structured Zac Posen, Helen Mirren had a regal feel in her Badgley Mischka, and Sofia Vergara looked stunning in her curve-hugging Vera Wang gown.

Bridal – Winter Whites

Pale pastels, icy whites and bridal influences were seen on a number of celebrities including Elle Macpherson in a Zac Posen, Jessica Biel rocked the most bridal looking gown designed by Elie Saab, Kate Beckinsale goes modern-Hollywood with a custom Roberto Cavalli, Amanda Peet wore an asymmetric lace Marc Jacobs gown, and even Angelina Jolie follows the trends in this sleek Atelier Versace gown – but of course to make her stand out she teamed it with a pop of red.

Two Tone

Normally reserved for just monochrome combinations, this year’s red carpet did have Claire Danes and Kate Winslet in Jenny Packham working the black and white option, but it also saw different colour combinations including both Emma Stone and Natalie Portman sporting Lanvin creations, Emma worked fuchsia and purple, while Natalie brought two of this year’s hottest colours together red and pink.

Mermaids

The clearest trend after backless had to be the mermaid silhouettes, which some might say is an old-fashioned style, I however couldn’t disagree more I love a fishtail hem on an awards red carpet. I think every silhouette has its place and mermaid tails I think have to be reserved for big occasions like the Golden Globes, Oscars and the Met Gala. Everyone who worked the trend looked fabulous to me but the trend belong to Zac Posen who designed Reese Witherspoon’s sexy scarlet gown, Kelly O’s structured dress, and even Elle worked her way into two trends with this retro-inspired layered tulle trumpet hem. As well as Sofia, Kate Beckinsale and Evan Rachel Wood.

There were a few other trends I was going to include: headbands as seen on Michelle Williams, Charlize Theron and Cougar Town’s Busy Phillip; big earrings worn by Julianne Moore and Julianna Margulies; and the ladies in red included Reese, Dianna Agron in Giles, and Stacy Keibler’s simple Valentino gown – but I felt five was plenty!!!

Want to relive the Golden Globes in just 20 mins? Well E! have put together a clever round-up:

I am going to blog my favourite dresses soon, you know me I always like to sleep on it, but don’t forget to let me know which was best dressed and what you thought of the trends seen this year.
